pbechard- hey, there's no animosity going on here. It's just a discussion, and a civilized one at that. I was a bit put off by your abrupt dismissal of Sakamoto and Lamb when you don't know much about them, and you assuming things about me, such as me not knowing much about music when I've been a professional musician. But these things are hardly dramatic and severe. Let's not make a huge issue out of it.
No hard feelings, eh?

luna: i get the feeling from your posts that you want this discussion to stop. if you dont want to take part in it. please dont post. i on the other hand am interested in hearing other people's point of views on this subject.
i must say. i am rather disappointed. artists which i had once had lots of respect for have turned out to be completely __________. This is the first real time that i actually tried posting in the discussion forum over the past two years that i have been reading this board. And to the happiness of most of you. it will probably be my last.

>>if you use craig's style, and you can make better work than craig. you deserve his business.<<
Yes, you dont deserve it maybe but you can own it. Its hard... but its not up to Craig or anyone else, its up to the People who buy the images.
Morality and respect are neat, but they are reasons for war and hate. So they cant be good in anyway.
However i dont wanna see Craig without a job or something like this. Iam sure i can learn much from him. If he dont wanna show his Stuff or any tutorials in the Future its okay for me... there are others.
But anyway i wanna hear what Craig has to say about all that...

=/ ugh....this thread just makes art sound un-fun.
I don't understand what is being discussed here. not much written stuff from sijun gives away craig's "style" it was mainly the tutorials on his site and 3Dpallete that were procedure specific as far as I knew, and a few posts that were maybe the same kind of thing. the rest was non specific basics theory from my point of view.
can someone re-post what was written in the first post? I think it's a good idea to archive all the stuff about basic theory that has been posted on here in the past by people like Craig.
does the style ape argument have anything to do with what was written first? or did it just spring up out of the blue?
All I know, is if it were not for Craig and Ron (to name a few) sweating it out to write down all the cool stuff they did back in the day. I would not be where I am today in terms of skill. all that I will ever be, is due to them caring enough to give me advice and help me along.
I hate the thought of that kind of thing not happening anymore. although I respect what Craig says about not wanting to go the way of Struzan.
I love seeing how other people do what they do. I like trying out new things. finding new ways of doing stuff that i hadn't thought of before.
I Don't know what to say. the whole thing just makes me deeply unhappy. |

Wow, this thread is getting huge!
Bump!
Copying & immitating styles happens all the time in the comic industry. Though some might get pass the immitation stage, most people never get off it. Shame if you ask me.
I must say I do dislike immitations, though learning through one isn't a bad thing.
Many of my friends like Anime & They follow styles like that as if it's a religion. That's probably the reason I dislike immitations.
I say if you want to learn about digital art, look at one's picture is enough, Better yet that's what the speed painting thread is for, isn't it? Since in speed painting, you can see how the artist takes the idea & shapes it from ground up.
That's my 2-Satang(Thai Currency), that's even less than 1 cent.

interessting thread! Esp. if one can not see, what everybody is talking about. Must be some kind of assembled sijun-quotes, but I can't find the document
I think, the problem with this forum is not its huge amount of information, but that it's not archived completely. Most of the older threats are quite useless, because the images are no longer existent.
Some time ago I wrote a perl-script that makes a local backup of all threats and the posted images. It was about 300 mb ;-) And lot of reading for me... ;-)
But some sort of FAQ would be a very cool idea, even if it only contains a list of threads that already discussed a question. Most of the the socalled "newbies" (I am one of them) have not the time to snoop throught the complete depths of sijun...
Questions like "What resolution", "What wacom", "How does he do that" a.s.o. where asked and answered so many time, why not assembly a list of this threats under FAQ and make this is popular to the newbies? I know, it's lot of work. But there seem to be people willing to do such work ;-)
Sorry for bad English
And sorry for (possibly) repeating somebody else ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
