Hi, I've recieved a lot of comments about my work with it's line work. Generally, my line weights are about the same and I've been told that I need to vary them between thick bold lines and thin faint lines.
Could anybody help me learn how to achieve that? This is my latest pic (two days old) and please tell me what I did wrong with the line weights.
I hope this email makes sense.....
I would like to get better, but I'm not really sure where to begin. If there are any tutorials I can go to, that would be great as well.
Thanks

I don't do line drawings such as yours, but maybe they mean something like this:
I could be wrong. In fact, I probably am wrong. ![](images/smiles/icon_razz.gif) |

Well, I was hoping to hear more responses to my question. I guess since I haven't heard from anybody (except for BloodStone, which I say thank you for), I must be doing everything right and not making any mistakes.
Whew! That's a load off of my mind. |

Basically, what they are meaning is that you vary the thickness of lines. Youd use Thick lines for not very detailed things, and thin ones for detailed things. Fool around with different styles of it, and find one you like. Lines of the same width is somewhat monotonous, variations in line width may add many different effects.

Cool picture by the way. |

Thanks everyone. I'm going to keep working on the line weight thing.
And yes, BloodStone, those are dead babies. The character is for a RPG, and the character description is for a newly undead Cleric (of an evil god, obviously!)holding a stringer of dead babies. I normally do not draw such things, but the author really wanted to emphasize just how evil this character really is and dead babies....works, I guess.
Like I said, I don't usually draw things like that, but that is what he wanted.
sigh..... ![](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) |

Actually, lineweights are used for depth and seperation. Usually objects closer to the viewer will have a thicker lineweight than items farther away. Also take into account lighting. Thicker lineweights for edges opposite of the light.. thinner lineweights on edges that are closer.. etc. There is a method to inking it isn't random lineweights. Do a search on the web for comic inking and you should find more information. |

i dont do line weighting for my stuff since i dont really use an outline. but yeah, what you do is for example you have a robot arm. you do the outline in a thickline, then any sort of bolts, metal plates in the next, and you take the smallest pen you got for the smallass wiringand buttons, the smaller the better.
before i forget it, check out the feng zhu site, for very glorious marker and linework, youll see what i mean. unfortunately i seem to have lost the address, so maybe someone else can give it to you
