Greetings from the unofficial King’s Quest IX: Every Cloak Has a Silver Lining development team.
We are currently looking for talented artists who are interested in working on this wonderful project in any of the following departments:
- Character Design
- Background Design
- Costume Design
- 3D Animation
This is a volunteer based project, but it would give you the opportunity to create a killer portfolio.
If you are interested, please visit us at http://www.kq9.org and fill out an application.
Sincerely,
The Unofficial King’s Quest IX Direction Crew |

sorry about the forum....
about Sierra shutting us down...
1)They haven't done so with Tierra and their KQ remakes (which are out there)
2)We have a very nice card to play.

Like Vesuvius, I found this to be rather absurd as well.
How can you have a clear conscience about stealing the name of a well-established series of games and hacking it up with sub-par development (at least, compared to Sierra's dev teams)?
Also, not only is this in the wrong forum, you double-posted it in two sections of these forums. |

3D animation doesn't belong in a KQ game. Just look at KQ8. |

It won't be full 3D. It will use a 3D set but with a fixed camera. THat way, we can use the 3D cool stuff, and still make it look 2D

I really don't think you have to worry about being "shutdown" if you're not selling it.
I mean people make bootlegs all the time guys, this is nothing new...

I really wasn't intending to respond to this since it's in the wrong forum anyhow, but I don't agree with the part I quote here, I neither think that sierra has very high standards anymore, nor do I feel there is anything wrong with fan-made stories using existing properties. I merely thought there was a good chance of it being "foxed" (meaning sierra lawyers would shut it down) plus I didn't like the way the later KQ games went.... but I don't have a problem with fan made developement that is not for profit and is respectful of the original (NO KING'S QUEST PORN!) |

I didn't realize it was non-profit, in which case, what I wrote should simply be ignored.
One thing I do find kinda funny though, is the solicitation of artists to work for free (or 'volunteer' as they say). If someone wants to build a killer portfolio, they can do it by drawing/painting subjects that they really love. Personally, I'd much prefer to stock my portfolio full of life drawings than I would of specific "King's Quest 9" art. It just seems so narrow-minded (no offence, of course). It just rubs me the wrong way I guess. |

About joing a project like this..
I think in theory you can get some good experience doing a project like this.
Doing exactly what you like only gets you so far. It doesn't say anything about your flexibility, capabilities to work with a team etc.
Therefore this would indeed be something nice to put on your resume.
In practice..90% of these projects fail miserably and are a waste of time.
So make sure it has a chance of succeeding. Demand to see a design doc, ask about the way the team is organised etc. |

As somebody already said, working on your own art only shows your talent, but not how you work when you have to achieve a goal, create what you are asked to, follow instructions, etc...
By the way, we are well organized, and we will go on until the project is finished.
