So you steal someones art, call it "free exposure", and when they come and whine at you you post this :
POKTERMINATION COMIC
By some of the art-losers (terminated)
(We know they will recheck)
Because many real artworkers love to share their artwork to other people and do not mind if the drawings have been posted on other websites and the owner of that site didn't asked for it, The good artworkers just leave a 'goodbye' letter with something about "We saw our art on your site and we are not mad if you didn't asked us, but next time please ask". We always give CREDITS to the artwork they or other people because we think the artwork rules, but when artworkers e-mail us about removing the artwork because of some silly copyrights (c) they just SUXXX
Private message:
Please don't think you are the ruler of the world when you can draw,
do not think your artwork will be ever safe on the internet,
do not think the drawn art of yourself is only for you,
the internet is about SHARING and leave everybody in PEACE!

Feel free to "stab" by emailing nasty things to the fucker. I have yet to witness someone involved in "art" with a more retarted attitude.

Ugh. This just honks the hell out of me. I've been having worse and worse problems with plagiarism and theft recently. Maybe it's because my pictures are in more Net galleries these days. Maybe it's because dishonesty is spreading. Whatever the reason, it's REALLY BLOODY IRRITATING.
The other day at school, I even had my drawing homework nicked right off the wall while I was in the cafeteria getting some food.
I've had a fair amount of success with getting thieves to get rid of stolen images by sending them e-mails which read something like this: "Hello. I couldn't help noticing your use of my images on your website. Perhaps you missed the e-mail address posted along with those images wherever you got them from, but had you chosen to use it before stealing my copyrighted work, you would know that the license for Web use of that particular image is available for $500. Perhaps this sum seems unreasonable to you, but it's MY image, and I can charge whatever I want for it. I make my living through resale of these images for print and for the Web. Therefore, what you have done amounts to shoplifting. When you are caught shoplifting from a non-Internet site, you don't usually get a chance to put the merchandise back to avoid prosecution. But I am nice, so I'm offering you that chance. Take the image down now, and you won't hear anything else from me. Leave it up, and you still won't hear from ME. You'll hear from my lawyer. Thanks."

boldly stating that anything on the internet can be shared with anyone without giving credit is like saying that the organic matter making up your body belongs to everyone in the world because it's made of the same basic compounds as other people...
weird analogy...I know...
Isn't there a way to copyright files with a tag or something? With Windows in the properties of a .psd there are areas to fill out copyright info? |

it would be sweet if you could some how store the info of that artist and all that with in the image like mp3 files do with the music, just make it so no one can edit it, unless you have the origonal file.. i dont know how that would work though |

I had a huge fight going on about this, some months back. I found out about people using my art without my permission and I rather flipped. My angry letter to them was followed up by a couple of weeks of flaming /ME/ on my site, and on their site, and in emails.
And why did they claim to have the right to flame me? They were paying me a compliment, they said. They were being nice by using my art without my permission. They had - and this they said proudly - probably directed at least ten people to my Elfwood page (never mind the fact that I have MORE than enough visitors at that page anyway). _I_ was being the rude one because I blamed them for being rude, so they intended to harass me until I took my page down and disappeared off the internet. Fortunately, they didn't
This, mostly thanks to a lawyer that wrote them a letter. I finally got sick to the "Die slut, die" mails I was receiving

Hamster, i'm mad because these cartoon character are for kids, and now they make a porn version of it and guess who is going to see it? not us, the kids. Then few years later, they're gonna mature it into porno at a very young age. Thats just terrible
Things like this are a disgrace to the art comunity, to chidlren's cartoon.....etc
I think these stuff are pure WRONG. If I have a children, i would obviously be caution if their Barney doll have a penis.
Hope you understand |

Well, I don't know about Tripod--I've never tried e-mailing Tripod about stolen art. But Angelfire has been kind enough to insist on its members either taking down the offending art, or getting off their servers. I believe they have a note in their terms of service about copyright material. And they DID enforce it after I sent them a few mails, and had a friend or two do the same. I heard that Geocities also has such a note, but never bothers to follow up on complaints. I think if you complain loudly enough, though, most sites will do SOMETHING.

I try to be extremely ultra-altruistic when it comes to the game art community. All I ask is that people who post my art send me an email. That's it! No fees, no links, just send me an email. to let me know.
Lo and behold I see Quad Angel on Planetquake.de (not .com, they actually asked ) with no email. It really pisses me off.
Anyway...
I don't start charging until they do. That's my rule. If they put it on CDROM or prints, and sell it, that's when I have a problem. As for the net, is an email really to much to ask? My URL is on the image... |

This is starting to get more and more common now. I really hate it.
Some time ago a colleague at work sat and chatted with a person on IRC The person said he was an artist and wanted to show his art. He showed his online portfolio page and i found one of my pictures in there.
some days after i read about this guy Adam Koscher using mine and Craig mullins pictures in his online portfolio. And not to mention this Binder guy that stole mine and Christers work. Anybody have an idea on how this can be prevented?

micke, try to make a signature that is big enough to not be possible to erased.
Some people tried making a big gradient through out 1/3 bottom of their art work. It will be a hassle for the thief to fix so they just give up. But for some clever one, they just chop off the entire gradient area. |

Well, I guess we should destroy David because Dr.Bang judged it 'not artistic' or 'offensive'. Sorry Dr.Bang, but as soon as you start judging others art as non-artistic you are just as bad as someone censoring things that you might like. Shame, shame, shame on you *tsk* *tsk*
Not that I particularly find that drawing nice, but I value freedom of expression just a little more importantly than you apparently.

After talking to hundreds of artists, noticing a comparable number of thefts (some of my work, some of others), and trying out a dozen anti-theft tricks, I've come to the conclusion that...THEY CAN'T BE STOPPED! Right-click disabled? Screen capture. Little flying things moving around over the picture? Screen-capture, paste together. Signature? Cut it out. Gradient? Doesn't look THAT bad. Claim it's part of the picture. Watermark? Who cares? Boss catches you? Say the artist's name is your pen-name. I swear, these people have a way around everything.
Personally, I go for a small yet ugly signature, and cutting 25 pixels off each side of my work before putting it on the Net. Neither of those things will stop a determined thief, but the 25-pixel thing ensures that I can prove the work is mine. Because I HAVE THE PIXELS, dammit! I can prove that I have more image than the thief does, which doesn't look too good for the thief.
