Hey ..

I didnt get to see the open house unfortunatly. I moved out of my appartment. Hmm i did art fundamentals this year and got accepted in traditional animation. Hmm did you see the art fundamental stuff????? Well i had a shit load of stuff in the open house lol.

Well personally for me art funamentals was a waste of my time. But was worth it to get into direct entry for animation. Teachers suck. Theres only a few good teachers.. do you know the teachers you got??? hopefully you will get Frank Reynolds for your imaging system class. Mike Mcarthy for your 2d , adn theres 2 great painting and drawing teachers that i did not get =(.. I was stuck with teachers that teache straight out of books and that dont know what they are doing.

The good thing about sheridan is that people in animation and illustration will help you . But i was lucky enouhg to live with 2 animation students...

anyways hope your experience in art fundamental will be much better then mine. OH and GO TO LIFEDRAWING EVERYNIGHT POSSIBLE. They have extra life drawing from 7-10 pm monday to friday and from 2pm-5pm in the animation wing on weekends. Trust me if youre stuck with a retarded teacher thats where you're going to learn.

anyways Good luck...

Yeah man I did check out the art fundamentals area (since I am going into it in september and all, heh), and there were quite a few good pieces of work in there as well.

I too have heard those stories about the art fundamentals training and how it may not be worth it. Basically, yeah, as of right now, I'm shooting for classical animation, and I've read up on recieving entry into it from the art fundamentals course. I also need another year to develop a portfolio and get some more practice before I'd consider trying for animation, so even if it isn't entirely worth it, it seems like a wise move for me.

Oh yeah... Since you've done this all already, how exactely does the direct entry work?

Glad to hear about those life drawing sessions... I can see myself attending many of those.

Congrats on making it into animation too! I saw the studio and a lot of the story boards that have been made there haning on the walls in the animation area today, all for the first time, and I was impressed. Hopefully I'll be there in another year .

I just got home from the Sheridan College open house today, and I can sum it all up in one word: INSPIRATION. I'm gonna be working a lot harder from now until september when I'll be entering their Art Fundamentals program, cause I REALLY want to get into one of the 3 year programs now after seeing some of the work displayed today.

I didn't see very much classical animation stuff, but what I did see was fantastic. It was also the first time I got to check out the studio they work in. The illustration area was great though, some really great styles going on there, and fantastic figure drawing everywhere.

I was origionally thinking I wanted to go to classical animation after my art fundies course, but after seeing all the great work coming out of the illustration program, I'm now thinking the other way. Illustation looks like a load of fun!

Anyone else check it out?

YEah i got direct entry myself. Its not as easy as they say but its easier to get in through that than it is through portfolio. The way direct entry works is like so:

- YOu need to keep a B+ throughtout the year in 2d,drawing,painting and imaging system.
- You need a B+ over all too

Once you have those criteria. IN febuary you will be put on a list and then they will ask you to put in alll the work you have done in second semester in a portfolio and some extra life drawings and what not. The one problem is that you only have like 2 or 3 weeks worht of work soo you dont have a variety to choose from. YOu have to make sure you do really good. But you know what It really comes down to your life drawing. especially if you apply for animation they want to see poses from 1min to 10 minutes. 5-10 mins is considered a LONG pose. Hmmm make sure you have you hands and feet and show direction of the head by putting in ears or eyes, NO matter how long the pose is wether it's 1 min or 10 mins. Alright so lets say you made it through the portfolios. Well in pass years you then move on to a animation test ( but this year there wasnt any soo YAY.). Im not sure if there's going to be a test next year but if there is the test goes like this:

You have 3 hours to do it. they give you a story board to do , some character posing and life drawing test. You would be surprise how many people cheatin the portfolio stage.

And to top it off Not many people get the B+ average or higher. This year out of like 500 people ( we were 600 to start with but you know people drop out and stuff) 75 people applied for animation and 90 people applied for illustrations direct entry. You can only apply to ONE direct entry sooo choose wisely. You can always apply through portfolio. And out of 75 people in the animation direct entry pool i think 30 people made it in.

alright soo you made it into animation direct entry. DONT SLACK off yet because you still need to keep your b+ average for the end of the school year or else they take it away from you.

Check out the traditional section and the nude section those are somethings i did in fundies. in the nude section those are some life drawing i put in my portfolio. Most poses are 5 min long and 1 min...

One problem about going to extra life drawing at night is that YOu need to set your priorities straight. for me Life drawing was #1 soo my marks wernt too high because i wouldnt spend as much time on my homeowork. I ended up with a B+ average with a few A's. You have alot of homework and i did my fair share of long nights and no sleep. To telll you the truth most people who made it into animation direct entry got the worst marks on the direct entry list. Because they all went to extra life drawing every day. People who got A+'s welll didnt make it through direct entrance because they didnt have a good life drawing portfolio. Soo if you can have a A in every class and go to life drawing EVERY single night then EVEN better.

Well art fundies is worth it for the life drawing the the direct entry possibility. But DONt rely on the teachers Teach your self and learn from others. As for portfolio. YOu wont have much of a portfollio to show. if you want to get into other colleges or animation they usually make you do a SPECIAL portfolio with specific things they need. DOnt worry Art fundies is awesome to meet people and have a good time. But to tell you the truth you dont have alot of free time to work on personal stuff.

Hmmmm I think thats all i have to say for now. DOnt hesitate to write an email or post another msg if you want to know anything. Id be glad to help.

BTW how old are you and where are you from ?

Hey thanks for the info, it's really helpful. I figured life drawing was the most important, as that's what everyone has said when speaking of animation. But good to know that it isn't the only necessary aspect.

I'm 19 and living in Mississauga.

none the less, both excellent programs
