For most artists, there was a defining moment, or period in time that made them want to be an artist.

What's your story?

Here's mine: I've always been drawing, and have always excelled at it, but never contemplated the thought of becoming an artist until about age 13~14(I wanted to be a fighter pilot until art consumed me. I had model planes everywere, and watched "Iron Eagle," "Top Gun" over and over). Prior to that turning point, I grew up with Japanese animation/comics(I was born in Taiwan, and moved to the States when I was 11), and I was a fan of D&D/Fighing Fantasy books. I would copy pictures from those sources, and enjoyed doing it. Very rarely did I draw anything original.

Around age 12~13, I became hooked on Robotech(that was the only Japanese animation showing in the U.S. at the time), and I was fascinated by what a combination of good story/art/music could do.

Then, it hit me: one day(summer of 1987), my mom's friend's son, showed me Macross: Do You Remember Love?(it was a poor, blurry copy, in original Japanese, with no subtitles. If you don't know what it is, it's an animated feature made in 1984, which wrapped up the Macross TV series franchise. In America, Macross was the first third of the Robotech series). I was completely blown away by the quality of the artwork, direction, designs, music, animation, voice acting. . etc. From that moment on, I was hooked, and I hunted down any available Japanese animation I could get my little paws on.

At that time, another catalyst was also responsible: I had evolved from reading D&D/Fighing Fantasy books to fantasy novels, and was in love with the cover paintings. From there, I discovered Michael Whelan, Boris Vallejo, Rowena, and many other fantasy/sci-fi painters.

Well, basically, Japanese animation inspired my passion for creating worlds, characters, awesome designs, immersive soundtracks, and fantasy paintings inspired my passion for the pure joy of painting. From there on, I researched classical painters from the past, and the rest is, as they say, history.

Your turn.

for visual arts:
"I opened my eyes, and was disgusted at what I saw."

I have to do my part to fix reality/life/existance, its ugly.

for music:
I turned on the radio and said, "Fuck, I can do better than this."

haven't turned on the radio since.

at age 13-15 I'm interested in being a fighter pilot, and i was ok at drawing at the time but airplanes interest me more.

Then at the beginning of age 16, i didnt care what i'm gonna be, all day, i just sit infront of my computer and make arts.

Then one day, i a sudden realize that i screwed up my eye and to be fighter pilot, i have to have an eyesight of 54672678927284782/20 and have 8436890286286932% in all of my school courses AND have extremely good health.

At then, i have an eye sight of 12/20, my school average was 60% and I'm skinny as hell. I realize that this is too much for me so i sadly give up my dream of being a fighter pilot.

I became hook up with computer arts even more. And one day, i saw pictures made by this dude at www.goodbrush.com and i didnt believe that it was done in Photoshop. After few days of analyzing it, i finally see that is WAS done in PS. Then i admire Craig Mullins like my dad, i considered grow up and be as good as Craig Mullins, no matter how much money I make.

Conincidently i was interested in Industrial design and consider taking it in College, which same thing as what Craig took after high school.

Then few months ago, i realize that i fucked, my marks are not high enough to go to Industrial design,

Then I planted to take fine arts, my parent wont let me. I have to take something else, because i dont want to make my parent sad.

So i plant to take Graphics Design, they 're still not happy with it although they let me.

Last month, i decided to go for Computer Science. Why? I read in an interview with a CG artist at Lucas Art , he said that the first thing i should take if i plan to go to CG field is Computer Science.

Thats right, I can't wait to master computer science, then after that i'm gonna take GRAPHICS DESIGN, ANIMATION AND FINE ARTS. I hope i would screw up any thing on the way.

Damn, this is the longest post i ever wrote.

I don't know. Drawing has always been fun for me. I just like to draw stuff. I still do. I think I will continue to as well...so, they tell me I fit into the "Artist" category...so I guess i'm an artist. I have a desire to express myself and I hope that I will be able to expand that from the 'visual' to the 'aural' someday. When I have time, money, and confidence.

Peace, ian.

Similar story here.

And video games had a big impact on me because I saw so much potential for the medium (back in the day, when creativity was still involved in video games)

edit: yeah, I'm aware that makes no sense, having kind of a love for 'serious' art and video games on the other hand - but that's me.

lol ...yep wanted to be a fighter pilot too didnt get to be one for same reasons as others, poor eyesight/health. Then there was the architect (decided too late as was finishing highschool already), then there was the lawyer (not sure why? oh yeah my law teacher was cute ) Finally ended up going into computer science. Last year of compsci found bunch of images done on a computer, started doing graphics, totally loved it (beats programming any day), someone actually hired me to do art nd now I'm here, a selftaught art apprentice in training. So I guess loving what I do AND making a living was my 'spark'. Looking back I'm giving meself another couple of years and then I'll probably turn a hippie or somethin..

Hm...

I actually wanted to be a writer. I loved writing, but I also loved drawing... so I wrote, and I drew, and I loved it.

There was no real point in time when things switched around for me. It's always been like that. Writing, drawing, writing. I'm the kind of person who has a head filled with pictures and stories - it's just a matter of getting it out. I still don't think of myself as an artist.

I guess I ended up getting better at drawing than writing, though, at some point. Almost wish it were the other way around... or maybe not.

OMG!! Yet another ex wanna-be too scrawny fighter pilot. However it was comic books and disney movies that got me into art. Especially the work of Wendy Pini http://www.elfquest.com

This led me into an anime junkie phase, and a few years ago, into the game biz.

Heh, as a side note, I also wanted to be a scientist, but I hated math. Who woulda thought there was so much math in 3DCG?

Enayla, do you write in Swedish or English? What do you write about?

Writing was also a huge part of my life, and still is. I started writing around the same time I started drawing(if you really want details about all this crap, here's the place: http://www.arcanum.net/~lunachild/Who_am_I.html).

One of my day dreams is that Random House(the biggest publisher in America) would sign a book deal with me, then I can pack my suitcase and a laptop, travel to different corners of the world, while writing my novel. Hahaha. Talk about dreams.

I write mostly literary drama. I used to write fantasy/sci-fi, but I've been on a serious literature kick for the last few years.

HOLY SHIT!

I wasn't interested in being a fighter pilot but I had this phase in which I made model airplanes (as listed before) and studied all their schematics in books and stuff...

As for the drawing part, I've always drawn, which is why it's confusing...I'm not sure if I create art since it's one of the only ways I've truly used to express myself since I can remember,if I just don't know any better, or if I have innate talent motivating me...

someday I'll figure all this stuff out...

ok, I'm done....
