Hey, yall. Just wanted to give a shout-out as this is my first post at this message board. I've browsed through some of the more recent post submitted here, and I think this is a really great place for creative people to collectively gather together, ask questions, critique, etc. So, without further delay...I guess I have a pretty complex. maybe not, question to ask. First, it helps if you've seen last year's movie 'Waking Life' directed by Richard Linklater. They recorded footage on a DV camera and then, somehow, processed the footage into a computer and painted right on top of the footage, for a very nice, animated (yet realistic) look. I've gone to the Waking Life website and have searched on there, but the best I figure it..they used a propietary (sp?) software program to accomplish this. Well, there in lies my question...does anyone have a good theory on how one could try and use this effect? I mean there always taking the footage and rendering it out as individual frames and painting on those...then re-assemblng, but that would take forever. If anyone has suggestions for me please, brain-storm and let me know. As always, any and all help is greatly appreciated. I look forward to many great conversations here at the board. Take it easy.
later.

If you have Flash, import a photo into it. Go to Modify --> Trace Bitmap.
What this does is simplify the billions of color in the picture into only a few hundred. So you get that cartoony effect.
So i think this is the same technique that they used in the movie, which is not that complicated. And the painting part, i think they did it the traditional way, frames by frames i think.
And yooooooo, I also would like to give a shout-out to my homiez a the Ottawa's Fourth Biggest Cracker Factory!!!!!! WAZZZZUPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP |

cool. I never even thought of Flash as a possible tool in this. Do you know what I would do to export this file, as for the file type, after I have 'altered' it? Thanks again for the help.
later.

Nope and Nope.
Waking Life was produced with a process called "Rotoscoping."
First you take the film of live-action, just like a normal movie. Then each frame is drawn over, one by one. That's how they did most of Waking Life.
Sorry, but you really can't get some of those effects with *any* program we have right now. Maybe in a few years, but not now. |

hello
I didnt say they got those kind of effect by Flash. Some of the scene in the movie, i cant tell if its a photo or a still, so i thought they might use that kind of technique. |

Your best bet is a program called "Media Studio Pro" by ULEAD.
Media Studio Info
It is a video editing program, and rotoscoping has been one of it's main features for years now. First time I heard of it was about 2 years ago when an online video producer mentioned that he used it to rotoscope the laser blade for his lightsaber. Should do exactly what you are looking for and won't require you to export every frame to rotoscope. The newest release works on Digital Video. I haven't had the opportunity to try it yet, but I hope to. |

Rotoscoping was also the technique used for the MTV EMA awards 2000 in stockholm... if anyone who hasn't seen the movie is wondering what this is... |

Wasn't the *first* LOTR (1978) done in the same way ? Rotoscoping on actual footage ? Just musing..
And since we're talking about automation raping, why not apply a photoshop filter with After effects on a whole footage ? Like India ink or something like that ? *cringes and leaps off building* |

egerie: that sounds very very plausible... some of the shots that are just silhouettes are definately live action shots, and it looks like a lot of the rest of the movie is too... and the orcs marching, remember how eerily real they looked? |

Yep, the LotR cartoon used rotoscoping. Except it was sort of badly done rotoscoping.
Another movie it was used in was Anastasia. They used it to animate the dancing scenes. |

Btw. Rotoscoping has been around for quite some time. 'Snowwhite and the seven dwarfs' was also rotoscoped. |
