I was at school, and I can't remember if I was using 5.5 or 6.0 on the MAcs, but if I clicked down, and held the mouse button down on the pencil tool button, I got a line tool which I could use. Now that I am at home, I don't see this tool anywhere. Its the tool where you make a line and it draws it automatically

i think it was in 6 that they moved it under the shape tool.
