Hey all!

I'm getting my new computer on Friday, and I was wondering what you guys think about its spec, and whether you have any suggestions for alterations?

Processor :1.7 Ghz P4
RAM: 256 Mb
Hard drive: 80 Gb
VDU : 19' Flat screen - Sony
Graphics card: GeForece 3 64Mb
Sound Card: Who cares...
2 USB ports for my
Trust Graphics Tablet, which is about $140
[I know, I know, Wacoms' the way...]

It's mainly for Photoshop painting with my tablet, and maybe a bit for games

That pretty much sums it up, all for around
$1200 [I'm converting from pounds here]

So, any refinements that I should make??

Is it a 19" flat display monitor? As in the surface is flat? Or is it a 19" LCD, 1 inch thick flat panel monitor? There's a big difference.
If you're getting all that plus a 19" flat panel monitor included, which is around a grand by itself, you need to hook me up

Only suggestion would be for more RAM...

I have 2 gig and still run out when working on large print jobs with tons of Photoshop layers... 256 is not very much RAM for a graphics production machine...

eeeeeeeewwwww pentium.. Its just my personal opinion, but I never cared for pentiums, exspecialy when it comes time to upgrade. You could have gotten a 2.0 athlon allot cheaper then a 1.7 pentium to boot. Also I heard the flat screen moniters aren't the best for photo editing and matte painting becuase the picture is too crisp.

i got practically the same pc for 700 pounds from pc world in november, but with 100 gig of hd. and yes i got a trust tablet too, its four months old and its broken, they are the shittest ever. dont get it ever!!!!!!! im gonna burn the daylights outta it asap when i get my wacom that is, i need 100 more pounds arrrgh

Yeah I think I'll go for a Wacom, probably a Graphire as its all I can afford at the moment..

It's my own opinion, but Win98 SE sucks...

I have Win2000 and at my job I use WinXP and they work just fine...

ok ok, I don't do big jobs with WinXP so I don't really know if it's ok !

I don't know if it's true, but I heard that Win98 had difficulties to deal with more than 128 megs RAM !? Perhaps someone else could confirm that information ?

I'm not sure about win98's memory problems, but I can tell you one thing... after having used 98 since it was released and then switching to 2000 a while before it's release... I've never been happier with an os switch... 2000 is the most stable and cozy ms os I've ever used...

only after my keyboard (!) fecking it up, I'm now stuck on XP which seems to hog ram like photoshop on acid... I think 256 is the minimum for XP or something silly like that... winamp stopped playing for a few seconds in even intervals when I was copying files between hd's... ick.

plus it's waaaay too user friendly EVERYWHERE...

I use to use Win98 and crashed once or twice a day... Now I'm using WinXP Pro, and haven't crashed in over two weeks... I'm quite happy and just a bit surprised to say XP has been great!!!

strata... I've got 2 gigs of RAM on a dual processor motherboard with 1.5 Athlons.

Initially, the machine (custom built for me by a friend) locked up a bit, but about 2 weeks ago it stopped doing that and I've not had a problem since. I think initially it was running too hot, so I've put bigger fans on the CPUs and added another fan to the housing. I think the initial problems were from overheating...

Win98 can only address 512 megs of RAM.

Actually the only problem with the ATI Radeon 8500DV is that it doesn't support dual display. I had to take mine back and get a regular Radeon 8500.

I'd get a ATI Radeon AIW 8500DV graphiccard=).. It's really good for 3d-modelling and movie editing.. And more ram.. ofcourse, atleast 512Mb rdram..

I don't know the exact cost... haven't added it all up, but it's somewhere between 4 and 5 thousand. It's in a large square server case with 2 100 gig drives and a removable drive which is just there to mirror the main operating system and installed programs in case of a major melt-down. Once I take a mirror image, I remove the drive and store it. If I ever do have that (inevitable) problem, I simply put in a new hard drive and copy the mirrored image over. It also has a large power supply and 4 extra bays if needed. It's like the last machine I'll ever need..

When new or faster or better CPUs or motherboards are available, I can just swap them in - with a bit of tech help from my friend... of course...
