I'm finally beginning to get a new site up after the end of critical-depth. The Loomis Creative Illustration Project is back in the works. I've got the first two sections up for download - Foundation and Line. I'll be finally working on finishing up the Tone section this month. My Host will probably have a cow once they see what I'm doing (how much of their bandwidth I'm sucking)...but until then - go for it.

I'd appreciate some feedback on the pdf format. I've had to reduce image sizes further and I'm losing a lot of of detail quality -tho' I like being able to put everything into a single file. I've futzed around with a lot of different pdf settings but nothing seems completely satisfactory. If any of you are pdf wizards out there let me know if you've got any hot tips.

What are you using to make your PDFs? In Adobe's tools, there's an option, enabled by default, for reducing the resolution to screen resolution; you'll want to turn that off. Also, you can choose the type of compression you want to use on images, generally.

Thanks for the encouragement, folks. I'm glad to know you're taking advantage of this.

ToastyKen - I've been trying a variety of settings, goofing around with the compression and the final pdf resolution, trying to get a balance of file size with readability/quality. My latest thinking is I may just stay with the original 150 dpi resolution I've settled on for the original line and tone scans and let the pdfs be big files -- or break the sections down further into 3 or 4 meg units --because the image quality is so important. Once I get to the color section the final pages/files will get even bigger, so I'm trying to get set up for this and eventually have some kind of download consistency.

I've taken the liberty of mirroring the Figure Drawing for All It's Worth book by Loomis at: PixelTwisters.

I'm sure most of you already have it. You can also find a PDF version of the project at that same location.

Once you get your project finished I can PDF it up for you with all the latest tweaks for 2003.

I was a little hesitent to post a link at first then decided WTF, why not, after I did some research on Copyright Law. I'm not a Copyright Lawyer but feel I did read accurate information at various reputible internet sources.

Here are some thoughts on Copyright Issues.
Copyright lasts for the length of the author�s life plus seventy years. If you�re writing your book right now under your own name, the copyright will last seventy years after your death. Like any other asset, your copyright can be left to your heirs, and they will have all the rights to license rights or continue to gather income from licensed rights as the original copyholder.

Copyright infringement is a federal crime. The only way to make sure you�re not infringing on other people�s copyright is to get permission to use their work. If your copyright is being infringed for profit, you may bring a civil lawsuit against the infringer, and the government may pursue criminal charges.

So..that being said..it would seem to me that you are safe as long as you are not selling any reproductions. Andrew Loomis was born in 1892 and died in 1959 which makes the copyright availiable for whatever in 2029.

I get a fair amount of work through that site.

I mostly started it because my friends and I needed a server without restrictions to host our sites. It�s always been a work in progress. Previous versions were all flashy and graphically heavy. This round I decided to go with a low fat version of the site. And to let the member sites speak for themselves. Even thought most of the members are working and don�t have time to update their sites.

Most of the work that comes in through there is by word of mouth. And include mostly corporate clients. Like Viacom and SDSU� But the way it works is someone comes to the site and looks through our members and finds a match. So I never really know the volume of work that comes through there. I just run the main site and my little corner at ww.pixeltwisters.com/tmcguire

That's a great thing you're doing, Markus. Thank you! These old works of Loomis are absolutely priceless. It's a wonder why they've slipped into such obscurity. I don't get it.
