Hi everyone... I'm pretty new to CG art and I'm wondering when you begin a new drawing, wich resolution do you use normally ?

I mean, is it a very big resolution for a good quality or it doesn't matter !?

Depends on what you're doing the drawing for.

For print or film use it definatly needs to be of extremely high resolution. For one's own art it's simply a matter of personal preference.

As for being good quality ... higher resolution does not make it better. I can run Everquest at 1600x1200, and it still looks like shit (in fact, it looks worse than 640x480), but Metal of Honor looks purdy at any resolution (if you can get the sucker to run on your system with the graphics options chucked up on high).

for printing issues, i'd go for 300dpi resolution.
i.e. every inch takes up 300 pixels.
i also recommend forgetting about dpi as long as you don't think about printing in any way. as long as you plan to make web art or just private fun thingies, think in pixels, it's far more easy and calculatable what size it'll have on people's screens

That's a very big file! To print the commonly recommended resolution is 300 pixels per inch, so at that size your image would be 216 meg in Photoshop, before adding layers etc... If you drop the res down to 200 pixels per inch it becomes a more manageable 96 megs, but it's still a very large file.

Are there any consumer printers that can print that large? I don't really work in inches but an Epson 1270 only goes up to A3 (42cmx29.7cm or 16x11 inches) which at 300dpi is "only" 50 meg, so to get a print that large you would need to go to a specialist shop and it would probably cost you a lot of money!

Yes, I'll go to a specialist shop... I have some contact so it will not be too expensive

I think I'll be able to have for a 100 $ (Canadian) ( so approximatly 50$American )
