So here is a question for people -
WHY do guys generally dig Blues and Blacks and girls go for Purples and Pinks? Whats the relativity?
I have my theories but I want to hear others opinions on this first.

In pictures, I use blue and purple most because those colours have a magic in themselves. I cant describe it but theyre just gorgeous. They lend an air of /something/ to a picture. In real life... well... favourite colour would be green... since I dont really consider black a colour. But its black and green... and red.

Why do girls like pink, and boys blue? Culture, my friend. Culture. All the pretty little girl clothes are in pink, all the pretty little boy clothes are in blue. I /loved/ blue when I was a kid but were there any blue girls clothes? Nope. Not at all. Pink is a pretty, girlish colour. Its the colour of the unpainted, innocent girl lips before she grows up and adds lipstick. Its the colour of her cheeks when she blushes, so chaste and pretty. Pink is what mommies want to see their little girls in when the little girls are small and thus the girls grow up to think of this as the correct colour for their likes. And they, one day, transfer this to their own kids.

Blue... well... blue is a manly colour. Its the colour of a lot of uniforms, and its a colour thats long been used to represent freedom. Where pink is warm and pretty and cosy, blue is open, free and looking forward. Blue is a promising colour. Small girls and small boys look pretty similar, as well. You put a little boy in a girls dress, and youll see very little difference (unless you peek at his diddly) between him and his sister. So he has to have his own colour. Blue is sweet without being TOO pretty.

Anyway, I ramble. What I mean to say is that /I/ think that its a cultural thing. This is taught to the children. Its every dads nightmare to have a son that wants to dress in pink... (No, Im lying its not... but thats a cultural stereotype... Im betting there are /loads/ of daddies out there that wouldnt mind...)

Well, anyway, that's just my (humble) opinion.

My current favorite color is blue, but it used to be purple and/or green. Enayla is right, blue and purple are just a cut above the other colors. They impart a certain feeling, an emotion that can't always be described. I'm mostly talking about blue, here- I love blue!

Hey Shizo- don't be a dick.

Sacrelicious Along the blues lays my favorite color, teal.

Enayla I took you seriously. I wonder though if its truly cultural however. What Im also curious about is what colors mean to other civilizations. Did blue and pink happen there too? How long has it been a tradition throughout the world then if you are correct? These are the sorts of things I think about when Im sitting at home and the lights go out

I hate this question, i really do. Favorites are greys and blacks, all blues and maroon. Emerald green is in there too.

And yea, i think it comes a large part from how we were raised. It's that funky funky subconscious thing. When you're a baby, for example, and look around you and see pink, it doesn't register as 'pink' and/or 'pink means girly'. That sticks in your mind for a while.

Emotions are often times driven by colors, and work the other way especially in art. Your outlook on life and your personality has to do with it too. For a while i wore a lot of monochrome and black because it made me feel secure an a little more respectable than i knew i was. I felt goth though, like I was almost snotty because of that. Now i tend to still wear dark colors and blues of all kinds because I'm no longer so 'goth'.

I've always gone toward cool colors, mebe just cuz i'm such a cool person? Right. I used to hate red, oranges and yellows.. i think because I was always pretty timid. There are days I wear red because I feel in a red mood, days i still wear greys and blacks because I feel that way. I never did like green or brown, except for this freaky stage in 8th grade when i was all 'environmental' and stuff. Scary. I don't like it much now except for, as mentioned above, emerald green.

Some pinks are ok, some oranges are ok, but it really depends on my mood. Usually go for the deeper colors though.

Nova:
Read your post already on the other forum. Darn me huh? I think Pink Pyro missed my main point; its still more common to see girls enjoying pink than guys. If blue is her favorite then why the Pink in her name?

I would not really say its just because of culture. I think pink is a putrid color... but I have used it before in my paintings, I just dont find it appealing to my eyes. Teal seems to remind me of the ocean I suppose. The days when I used to snorkel, scuba dive, surf and not give a care about anything else. As Lunatique would say "a vibrant color" (that guy just rocks)

faustgfx: I think his posts speak for them self.

I was serious when I say that I think it has to do with culture.

I'm not serious about the use of words like "mommies" and "innocent" and "manly", though. I used those because I'm downright sick of parents who think like that.

Enayla: Ever think about the stories you hear though where the parents want a girl but they get a boy instead... and some sick family member decides to dress the poor kid up in pink. You hear later the boy is now a man and an extreme gay eccentric. I'm being serious. My point is, I seriously wonder what that all means.

Visionary: I think of it like this...

I don't think wearing this or that colour could change you inside - you are what you are. Maybe those guys were gay to begin with. 10% of us are supposedly gay (or bisexual) - it's bound to happen once in a while that someone who is homosexual is dressed in pink as a kid by his parents. Same thing goes for a homosexual woman - some of them are probably dressed in blue when they're kids, too. Hey, I bet there's a bunch of straight people out there with the same "problem".

Thing is, it might also be a cause of the people that surround these "pink dressing boys"... We often become what people think we are. We have our cultural prejudices, and because of this, a lot of people will look askance at a boy dressed in pink. Maybe he'll feel different, or shut out of society, and maybe he'll be drawn to others who feel the same. What do I know? I haven't been in the situation. I highly doubt the colours have some inner meaning though, other than the cultural one. Gods, it sounds like colours can change your life *laughs* Okay, I'm a looney, don't listen to what I say. I'm pulling this to extremes.

I can't imagine that wearing this or that colour would truly affect us just through the /colour/. I can imagine that the treatment that the society around us might give us through the colour could affect us, though. People who dress only in black are treated a certain way, so are people who dress purely in pink. If you see someone wearing psychedelic colours, you might make assumptions, and you might treat that person accordingly.

Or maybe not, no... not everyone - far from everyone. I've just noticed that some tend to judge people based on how they dress, and colours are very much part of this.

Gah. I don't know what I'm talking about. It's way too early and I've got a 39C temperature, feeling like crap. I think I'll go to bed again.

Then explain why Americans use black to describe death but the eastern cultures use white instead. I think this ties in with what I was saying as well.

A combination perhaps of what we have both been saying even. If it was cultural decision entirely what were the decideing factors?

I appriciate your input

Don't know....it's like vibriant colours that are right in front or touching me makes me feel....well angry. I can't explain it, been like that since a child. Weird thing is colours in art don't disturb me, but everything from coloured stop lights too flowers sparks this uncontrolable aggreviation inside. I've never hurt anyone because of it, it just leaves me uncomfortable.

Red: Stoplights, Christian Dior Plastic Shine lip gloss (red AND shiny), buses, roses, patent leather shoes, short dresses, window shades in brothels, naughty lingerie, angry faces, blood, gore, viscera, splatty horror stories, the morning sun, lab rats' eyes, bruised skin, Red Delicious apples, and vibrant Scottish hair.

I think that about covers it.

Now, who wants to see me draw a picture with all those things in it? (Ain't gonna happen.)

Black and white.
Polar opposites. Reflect all light or absorb all light.
My entire wardrobe is not made out of black and white clothes, but I like 'em more than other colors. Especially in conjunction with each other. They make for a nice contrast.

Here's an interesting point: if our preconception about colors and the attitudes/moods they represent were wiped out, and our memories of colors started with a clean slate, without any of the cultural influences, would we still arrive at our current tastes/preferences?

I think all colors can be beautiful, depending on how they are used, and for what purpose. Imagine if you went downtown one day, and all the buildings, signs, pedestrians, and cars were all similar colors. It'd be a pretty boring sight, wouldn't it?

For wardrobe and furnishings, it's a different matter. It really depends on the owner's personality and mood.

I like dark colors and earth tones for wardrobe and funishings. Black, burgundy, grey..etc.

I dont actually disagree with any of you. In fact, you all made (the ones that were serious at least) some valid points.

We DO relate colors to emotions and thoughts. Fact. There are obvious reasons why people would think white represents pureness, black represents evil ect. ect. There are many approaches you can come at this from what Ive been reading here. People can wear black because they feel a sense of themselves becoming invisible and thus hide from the world. They could even wear black clothing because it portrays this badass aura around them.

Someone stated earlier that blues are more of a relaxing color, which I agree with. I stated that teal itself reminds me of the beach. Calm and soothing for me. However, the color of red makes me want to slaughter the person standing next to me. They are both strong colors but I could hardly put red with my personality. Pink however, I have no clue why girls like pink. Can someone explain this please?

I think pink makes them feel more feminine or something. Society has embraced the colour pink to be so unmolested and innocent for so long that I think it's become natural for them to like....like for instance: men don't seem to show emotion when conversating with other men because it's been dubbed a sign of femininity. Sure in recent years pink has come to symbolize attractiveness and suductiveness....but at the same time those persons that were used to portray sexyness also maintian a sense of purity or innocence of a child....for instance: A women in a movie plays a slut who wears pink, but a guy falls in love with here because she was forced to become a slut, and neede her pimp for a sense of safety....which enabled her to be viewed as innocent.

It's also become taboo for men to wear pink, so I think it's become more of a label...like "Hey Look at Me I'm a Girl" or something. Especially in the US, with all the questionable sexuallities coming from the male side of things. Sure some women just like the colour....but that's just my theory.

Also I've found that most girls who wear lot's of pink claim another colour to be their favorite. Oh...and from the girls I know, I've found girls who prefer purple appeared to be more independent than the ones I know who like pink. Just my m.o.

I find there's a lot of angles on color interpretation, but the one that's always been natural to me is simply emotion. Different colors relate to our emotions in obvious and less obvious ways, but I think it's as simple as that, us choosing a color that is the most accurate expression at the time... I don't really believe in that childhood affixation stuff, because I tend to be extra conscious of my thoughts and find them stemming from other things, either relating to life on the whole or the moment, but not really the unresolved past.

black + red + darkgreen

there is a cool german song from 'die skeptiker* that favours black+red:

[german]
...
unsre farben sind schwarz rot,
unser ziel ist anarchie
wir verachten die gewalt
und bekaempfen sie.
...
[/german]

translation:
...
our colors are black red
our goal is anarchy
we despise violence
and fight against (violence)
