Hard one...
A good film, I think. Or things like 'A touch of Frost'. And a guaranteed impulse is a nature documentary. It is quite popular nowadays to interweave the story you are trying to tell in your documentary with some shots of clouds, the moon or the stars passing by, only in an accellerated motion. If that isn't the coolest thing the camera has brought us!
Music is more of a way to keep me going. |

Bethoven, Mozart and Bach rule the universe. Bach is the math of music. Movie soundtracks like Blade Runner, Gladiator and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Or even game soundtracks like Silent Hill and Metal Gear Solid.
As much as I like Bob Marley, NIN, No doubt, Cake etc...they just don't seem to get my imagaination going in a way that is conductive to the creative process for me. I think anything with lyrics just screws me up.
I also draw inspiration from video games (I'd like to do one based on Starflight one time)or miniature wargames (Warhammer), Pencil and paper RPG's etc. |

Good artwork gets me going. I see a few good paintings on Sijun and I'm get all fired up. I also listen to a lot of soundtracks while I work. A couple of faves:
The Last of the Mohicans, Trevor Jones
Azel, Panzer Dragoon Saga Collection
Passion, Peter Gabriel
Conan the Barbarian, Basil Poledouris
The Dark Crystal, Trevor Jones (again)
Symphonic Suite AKIRA, Geinoh Yamashirogumi
Planet of the Ape, Jerry Goldsmith (the original one, not the remake)
Nausicaa Perfect Collection (features the image album and the Original Soundtrack)

i just wondered what gets your peoples imaginations going, what kinda music, what tv progs artists, etc, for me it must be metallica. turn the page. this song is my last resort if i need to settle down. if that dont work, nothing will, but usually things like red hot chillipeppers, ash, linkin park, muse slipknot... all the lot
also what i think is weird is when i need new ideas i go and do my maths homework. my brain just gets the best ideas then. i think its because maths is my main subject and i do it so mych, but i think its so boring, that my hands just do the work and my brain just thinks of my favourite hobby and the best picture ideas just strike me (yep, no maths means an art slump!!!) so, what do you people do to get youreselves down to work |

When I need to get the creative juices flowing... I go grab a cigarette. If possible, I shoot down a couple shots or glasses of alcoholic beverage of choice.
... so now that I've quite smoking, and I hardly find it acceptable to drink at work, what should I do when I'm artistically blocked? |

different stuff from time to time. but movies, music and art are usual.
brainstorming ideas under the influence of a substance is another aproach i do now and then. |

quite interesting what people have to say, but that using other "substances" works for me. al i see infront of me is a good pic that turns worse as the "substance" wears off lol |

A fast paced peice of anime music usually does the trick for me. Slayers, Outlaw Star, Knights of Ramune, Sorcerer Hunters, etc... or video game muzak...
Or if I'm in a more somber state of mind, Techno/Rock: Snake River Conspiracy, J-off-Jill, Rob Zombie, etc...
My 'inspiration' usually comes from daydreaming. (Laying out Real Estate Records can do that to a person.) Daydreaming and Gaming. |

what Dr Bang said :P
hehe, seriously, good artwork gets me inspired. Coming to this forum and other art sites.
Movies are very inspirational and so are video games. Music doesn't really do it for me. |

most often it's good music (Theatre of tragedy - Aegis, Therion - Vovin or Crowning of Atlantis, slow gothic like The Sins of Thy Beloved, occasionally Mike Oldfield, Era...), movies, looking at other artists' stuff also can be inspiring as long as you don't copy it. |

Movie soundtracks is best for inspiration I think - Conan, squatting tiger, bladerunner etc.
But I find that when I listen to music while drawing I tend to draw at the same pace/tempo as the song I'm hearing..
And when animating I have to turn of the music because it fucks with the rythm of the movement - Know what I mean?
One record that I can listen to over and over (when working) is Megadeth's Countdown to Extinction.. I'm barely aware that it's playing at all - until it ends and I go: "didn't I just press play?"
Lately my favourite work record is Slayers: music in diabolus..
Oops, I'm babbling.. sorry! |

usually what gets me going:
1. Something really beautiful [music, a person, a thought, a feeling]
2. Something really ugly [a person, a thought, a feeling]. For example, a rash feeling towards someone is sometimes manifested in the form of a painting of an grotesque old man, creature, etc.
3. Getting really angry at an artist/artwork and denying the fact I could never be as good as them. So I try.

I didn't realize until today -- pressure gets me going. I realized that I'm a totally lazy person, so I would set a date for everything. If I didn't finish that project on time, someone can punish me. Also, sad things gets me going, especially things that happened to me. When I recall such moments, I think I paint better than usual. |

Beautiful, moving music. All that other stuff is good, esp. classical.. but
Yann Tiersen.
THe man is amazing. Especially "la chute", "rue des cascades", and "Soir de fete". I can't begin to express how good his music is. |

Hm...the threat of imminent dismemberment by a crazed army of art directors if I don't get my rat's ass in motion, maybe....
Oh, and Verdi. I like Verdi. |

I usually have to just have an idea of something I want to make, and that's it. Bach, Wagner, Grieg, Verdi(Bjoerling or Pavarotti), Tchaikovsky...I love 'em, but they don't make me wanna paint. And of course sometimes I feel like I haven't practised enough and I try to force myself to paint or draw, and its aimless and looks like crap. |

This place and other art discussions get me going.
Art museums too. There is something especially inspiring when you see a painting good or bad in person. If it's in print, then it must be really good work to get me going.
Also songs like Rocketman and what never fails is the Raiders of the Lost Ark theme. There are others too, but I got to go. |

My dummy.
It's a big book that I always carry with me.
I record in it anything that inspires me, all the idea's I get, all the initial sketches I do, the filosofical thoughts that I get, daydreams, fantasies...actually anything that I think has potential to help me with an art project. If you do this for a while you start developing your idea's further. Stories start rolling. You start seeing underlying themes in your artwork. And it becomes more personal.
Most people here must be familliar with this concept to a certain degree.
In holland, at least, it's the first thing they teach you at the art schools.
And it works great. I started doing this with discipline last year. And after a few months I just had such a wealth of idea's sitting there to be worked on. All I have to do is open my dummy and pick something... |
