I don't know how it works, but I think you could just take a smoked sheet of plexi and light it from behind

I made my own about 10 years ago. It's a bit different than the one you posted(I designed it myself). I don't use it anymore as I've turned digital, but I still have feelings attached to it, since I used it for about 8 years when I was in the comics biz.

Here's a pic of it sitting in a game dev house 2 years ago. (on the left)

Don't use plexiglass that's too thin(it will bend). One light should be enough(you can use two if you want it VERY bright). To hold the boards together, you can use glue or nails/screws.

Cut holes on left and right for the switch and electrical cord.

Have fun!!

Yeah, it's fairly easy to put together a light box. All you really need is a nice sturdy box, some plastic, and a light.

If I were you, I'd only use a flourescent light. Normal light-bulbs tend to get very hot in a pretty short amount of time.

Many years ago, the first light-box I made had a regular light. I actually melted the plastic! So don't make the same mistake as me...

I put black lights and flourescent lights in mine. I can see all kinds of bad things like finger marks and the like with the balck light. Couldn't live without it...

cheap alternatives:

1)Find a glass top coffee table, stick a lamp or some light source below ...voila

2)Use your window, best to work during day time, at night use ur coffee table. Good arm exercises

that black light is an amazing idea! I might build one just for that reason, not becuase it'd be useful to me in anyway, but because it'd be cool!
