Me and some friends were talking about game art and we got on the subject of style. Not a lot of games are very unique stylistically speaking , We got on the subject of basing the look of a game on a certain artist, much like they do with Disney movies. If you had to base the look of a game ( let’s say a fantasy role playing game ) on a certain artist who would it be and why??

I think that I would choose Michael Whelan over. Based simply on the fact that when I think of fantasy artwork his paintings come to mind first. I also dislike muted pallets , so his bright colors and use of contrast really would work for me. I also like to think of fantasy games as being epic, though none have achieved this level of submersion yet, his work is a good example of what could be in my opinion.

I am very interested in other opinions so please add if you have an idea!!

I think it would nifty to play a video game in an expressionistic painting type world. It would feel very surreal.

I agree about HR giger's work, that would make for an interesting ( and slightly twisted), but fun game concept. If done correctly

Funny you say Danato liser because in my opnion he is very very influenced by Michael Whelan if you compare there work you can see it. I also like his work He would be a good one . Giger would be far to dark for my taste for a fantasy RPG but im sure some people would dig it.

I find Rodney Mathews style to be very interesting, it is extremly unique .

1)Nirasawa Yasushi(His sculptures makes Brom look tame)

2)Yamashita Ikuto(His Dark Whisper series would make an awesome game)

3)Syd Mead(They should've hired him to do designs for Omnikron)

What ?? You mean there isn't one game out there based on Giger's work ?!? No way.. Surely there must be one, even if it's really old.

although his work is more illustration than painting/traditional work I'd love to see Frank Miller (Sin City, Dark Knight Returns, DareDevil to name a few) get a shot at a game.

He's a decent writer (ever seen Robocop 2 or read any of his books?) so a story wouldnt be that hard to come by. Plus his hard edged noir look from Sin City would be wicked.

yeah... I'm a fanboy. heh

Well I think style elements of gigers work have made it into many many scifi dark type...fps..type..stuff. Especially in terms of architecture. Alien VS predator...Doesn't that have that Giger alien? Excuse me if I am bullshitting. I am not a very big scifi connaisseur.

I think anything surrealistic would be really cool. That seems to be the only style that could really add to the gaming experience.
Alice had some pretty surreal stuff. I loved that game! I played it more than once.

There was an adventure game based on H.R. Giger's work that was supposed to be pretty cool/twisted. I don't remember the name but I'm sure anyone interested could find info without tooo much difficulty.

Avp was based on movies that giger designed. I doubt that giger himself did anything with the games.

Anyways, today's computers are to weak to do Giger's work justice. His smooth and organic style is too complex to be rendered in realitime.

I'd like to see a cubistic game. Would be hard to navigate in it, though.

Dark Seed hosted Giger's art. It was actually the first place I'd ran into his work, and it scared the absolute shite outta me. Played that game for the first time in the dark, not knowing anything about it. I didn't sleep for a quite a few days @:-)

Still haven't played the sequel. Anyone played it or the original, or am I showing my age? *laughs*

Mike Mignola for a toon rendering engine, but not the washed out toon render you usualy see, more the dark rich tones of the later Hellboy.

Shirow for the detailed SF gagetry

Hiroaki Samura for the camera work - be an awesome action game

Enki Bilal for wicked texturing.

That's right Brain, the Geiger games were all in the Dark Seed series. Definitely some of the most original and stylish games made.
