set it to the resolution of the picture when scanned or up to 100 over that. 400-600 is usually a good number to work with. try different things out, depending on what pc you got, you can do better combinations |

i usually paint at 300 dpi for the sake of printing. the final size of the picture depends then of the size i want it to be in printed state.
if i work for digital use entirely, resolution in means of "dpi" is useless. what is saved is the number of pixels with a certain amount of information per pixel. the number of resolution in means of dpi doesn't change anything as long you want to display it on screen only.
in a gif test i once saw in another forum, the only difference between a gif size 30x30 px resolution 100dpi and the same with resolution 1 dpi was the handful of bytes that "100" needs more than "1" to save.
sketches for not-printing use are kept well in 700px imho. some of them get bigger, some are smaller.
really painted artwork often gets up til several thousands of pixels in height and with depending of the printed size i want it to be.
just my 2c |

I like to make my canvas around 10"x6.5" to fill a 8.5"x11" sheet of paper for printing. And I set the dpi around 650-700, which makes the final image about 6000pix long or high. |

yea, but it depends on the brush you using and how fast your cpu is and how much ram you have. I never use a brush bigger than 200-300 pix. |
