i miss the days of old seems like years ago when you could visit the forum be awe inspired by a thread and then the artist would take the time and teach you. all im sayin is damn i miss ron lemon n craig mullins when they were daily or even weekly contributors. ive come a long way as a artist i think in these past year or two maybe more it seems. and i owe a lot to those artist, including feng zhu, seeg miller, francis, micke, joachim, jezebel, sumaleth, danny, jason manely, captin flush, shane glines, loki, roundeye, frost, vebjorn, justin sweet, isiric, liquid!, flexible elf, and countless others thankyou.
anyone know what happend to some of the people? i know most are busy with work and life, but id still like to know what ron lemon fred flickstone has been up to.
also would anyone consider doing a lesson like the paint along with teacher lesson, quick subjects, certain topic drawing, cube lessons, color n value lesson, life drawing, perspective, or anything else someone would be willing to teach, or critique.
i think theres more then enough students on here but, few and understandably so teachers with enough free time.
any takers? |

im wondering too....though some of them are coming back.... the rest are probably working or busy with school. The worst is probably spending time with girl friend, those kind of things are very time comsuming.

First of all, I don't think teacher is a term "they" would be comfortable with, mentors, or inspiration are probably more agreable, as it does not make it such a percieved responsibility. Maybe even just "Good Guys"
I think many just became tired of newbees demanding help, and some who got it rejected it, in favour of their own "style".
That would probably frustrate and tick off most helpful and skilled people who took the time and effort to comment, even though they had no obligation to do so.
I think many of them are still lurking around here from time to time, maybe getting inspiration, if they are lucky enough to dodge all the crap ( countless badly executed anime/manga rip-offs, dodgy robo-elves ( or is that elfs), undedicated feeble attempts in general, or extremely repetitive and stereotypical ogres and monsters for example )that keeps popping up in overabundant supply.
Some are still posting, but rarely, and usually just waiting for their old buddies co comment. A little is better than never I suppose. The newbees outnumber the pros 500:1, also not a good thing for the pros, since they would just give and not get useful advice to an overwhelming degree.
I understand why they have become scarce .. but it is still sad ...
Let us try to take good care of the few that remain ..

Some are still around but a lot left to goto the lumental forums. 'Invitiation only'
So of course that stirred up irritation, and of course we were sad so many left, but at that time the forums were going through a bad patch and you can't blame them for trying to escape it. |

Remember, they weren't OBLIGATED to teach any of us SQUAT.
They did because they are nice people. It's not their responsibility to see us get better.
You should learn and grow with or without guidance from others. It's YOUR PERSONAL QUEST to become a great artist, so do it no matter what. |

Yeah, but its a nice fuzzy and warm feeling to be under someones wing, even for just a single thread.
The mentor princible certainly applies here.
But remember that old Kenobi became a "guiding ghost"....remember....?!

lunatique: i understand what your saying but from your statement i get the feeling that you think i mean to persue or persuade them into teaching.. if they wanna teach itll be of their own choice, my list of people wasnt meant to highlight them in anyway asking for them to teach me but to thank them for whether they know it or know they already taught me something.
at anyrate... my personal request for instruction is in capturing suttle reflections in objects. my problem is since they are so suttle almost hinted reflections, i have a hard time interpreting them or seeing how exactly to draw the reflection. im not so much interested in how to draw a reflection on a sphere but more of a broader subject like how the forementioned artists learned to recreate reflections in their studies. Id like to get better but the most effective method eludes me and since i havent had any art schooling i figured id ask.. is it life drawing? seems like the cant go wrong way but are there other ways?
anyhow im rambling on cya later

Perhaps the forums have lost the novelty value that they once had when they first opened. People came along because it was an interesting place to be, and whilst that hasn't changed, I think the novelty is kinda wearing off now.
[EDIT - I'm talking about forums in general ]

why not just make this an invitation or sign up kind of forum, like lumental. and if any newbies that are currently signed up screw up with the "it's just my style" or are annoying in any way you don't like, simply ban them.
although that might take too much time for someone to do all that when you could just go to lumental, i suppose.
dang, i want to go to lumental... but i'm not good enough yet :-\ ah, i will be some day. |

hey all...
people are still around...but there does reach a point where we all have to take the things we have learned from our mentors and do our best to move ahead of them. that is what we have to do. Grow. There has been a huge amount of improvment from you all since I first visited this forum. Im sure some of you are ready to be those next teachers. If you are not...keep drawing and painting...keep listening...keep learning. you will get there.
Time to step up.
jason manley
ps..justin usually doesnt contribute to forums like this. He does a tremendous amount of freelance in addition to his work at Black Isle...as well as a family. He is aware of these forums though. We have spoken about them before. Have you all seen his pic on the cover of "the world of Shanarra"? Its my favorite painting of his. |

I'm still relatively new to the Forums, but so far most people here are great. I post my work for crits and I get a few bites. Not as many as I would like, but a few. My goal is not to be the best in the world, just the best in my little corner of it. The only help I ask is "Does this eye look right?" or "Are the legs proportionate to the rest of the body?". I don't want to know how to colour glass, or make a rust texture. A good artist knows to observe those things if you really want to learn it. Art is about observation, not tutorials. I'm not saying that tutorials don't have their place, but even an aspiring artist shouldn't ask for help if they aren't willing to give some help.
Sorry I started rambling. I hope everything I said made a little sense. It is a shame that those artists left, if they indeed did so, but there are several others who are willing to help.
Drawnblud.

aahh you can't make this place invite only, I found this through like a chain of websites and if it wasn't for me finding this fourm I wouldn't know anything I've learned in the past 2 weeks (which is quite a bit) not only has this board taught me but it's inspired me. Hell this board has even helped me decide what I'm going to do for a living. If this board was invite only I wouldn't know jakc shit and would still be in question on career choices. It's the pro's choice not to come back, or to leave, and I don't blame them. Altough I havn' been here long, I can already see that this message board has passed it's glory days, but thats no reason to make it invite only. Where the hell would people get invited from? I think we should try and make the best of what we have, which is quite a bit. Even if they're stupid n00bs who act like bitches and do stupid shit, it's just somthing we have to ignore. Eventually they'll get the point and either leave or stop. ands thats basicly all I have to say. |
