I have seen a name i wanted on namezero and I was thinking of leasing it. However I figured I'd ask all of you that have been doing this for a while for advice. Is getting a host the only way to go? Which ones do you recommend? Has anyone used namezero? Finally has anyone got their website running of their own pc/servver??...that to me has gotta be the coolest but I have no clue how to do that. Thanks...

Free webspace = evil, plus you give up rights to anything on it without watermarks or proof of ownership.

Gotta pay for webspace to get good stuff.

Or try www.ice.org... hope they don't get spammed.

http://liquid2k.com is fantastic. i just moved my site there.. only deal is that you have to use their web-based uploading system, which isn't happy if you're on a slow connection.

http://www.abac.net/services/hosting-basic.html

Aplus.net man. For $10 bucks a month you get:

-500MB Web space
-Unlimited Web traffic
-5 email accounts
-Unlimited email forwarding and auto responders
-CGI
-Online Statistics (these are nice)
-Image Maps
-24 X 7 technical support

They've never complained, even when I was Planetquaked. I've always gotten tech support with minimal waiting, and they promptly took care of any issues. I use FTP to upload.

Before you jump the gun with hosting services, carefully shop around. There really is no "best" hosting service, you just have to find one that is right for you.

Consider how much bandwidth you'll need, how many visitors you are expecting, how much space you'll need... etc. Be wary of places that claim to offer "unlimited" services. Read the texts carefully, frequently, hosting services don't seem to know what the heck they are talking about and don't know what "bandwidth" or FTP even is! I don't think they'll be singing such a sweet tune when your bandwidth is averaging 10 gigs a day! Cosider reading this article first: Hosting Help-Size does Matter!

As for my host, I use Your-Site. When I decided to get a domain name and purchase web space (I finally snapped at Tripod's anti-direct linking and ugly pop-ups), I shopped around for several weeks, and I kept finding supposed "good deals," but a lot seemed a little vague with what they offered or seemed "too good to be true." Be careful with these! Your-site was a lot of help and they had a plan that fit my tiny budget. The price per month varies by the number of months... for instance, you can purchase an entire year of hosting for $5 a month! ...But you have to purchase the entire year. I bought 3 months at $18 (that's $6/month - still very good). I have had them for 6 months now and in my experience, they have never been down or problematic. There are no setup fees (unless you set up your domain name with them). Check out their site for more information (it is too much info to list here). As for my domain name, I purchased it from Register Fly for only $10/ year! Again, no ugly setup fees. Check out their site for more info.

I'm being hosted by my friend for free but here's what i think:

Although bandwidth and the like are really important, also remember to check how much space is provided. I've checked the sites that were mentioned and now i know why they're cheap. They're like $5-10/month because they offer only like 50MB (excluding the post that offered 500MB). If you know that your site won't surpass the limit then it's okay. My own site is about 40MB right now. Also, you have to check if they offer cgi-bin or php support because if you ever want to add anything to your website like an oekaki or php pages they won't work.

I also agree that you should check everything the service promises. Hosting sites tend to exaggerate what they can offer just to get moola. They don't usually expect people who make personal sites to get a lot of traffic.

Well, that's all I have to say. If you only plan on making a few links and images then all the sites listed above works fine. Good luck.

Edge, I use http://www.domaindlx.com free webhosting and I am quite happy with it. Hotlinking works and not so many problems have been appeared. My site is located in http://art.domaindlx.com/maxon/ but I use redirect to it from www.maxon.rules.it

[EDIT] Oh, the webspace is limited only to 15MBs, but it sure is enough for me. Also FTP-transferring is allowed.
