I saw from a posted topic yesterday (one I posted) something about digital music development - impulse tracking. What is that? What's the relationship to Fruity Loops and other apps - like Acid, etc. I play around with those apps and was just wondering.

It's what you do with Impulse Tracker, a tracker program that works just like fasttracker, screamtracker, futuretracker, mod(plug)tracker, etc...

They work by having a series of columns in which you insert notes, speed and effects. Put it all together with a pattern sequencer and you have music.

Nice

Impulse Tracker is an old DOS-based music program created by Jeff Lim. Its freeware unless you want to output to a stereo WAV file, in which case Jeff sends you the driver in exchange for a small donation. People started pirating the stereo WAV driver, and out of frustration, Jeff stopped developing the software three or four years ago (though you can still send him money and get the stereo driver).

Because it was so far ahead of other trackers in terms of sheer technical muscle, it still sees a lot of use today. However, as hope for a sequel fades, people are slowly moving to newer tools . . . in my case, I'm migrating over to a rippin' little soft-synth called Orion.

You can download Impulse Tracker here:
http://v75.vweb.citenet.net/it/

And there's a demo of Orion available here:
http://www.sonic-syndicate.com

And if you're after free sound tools:

All of the tracks on my page were made with Impulse Tracker:

Don't listen to those bums
I tried many software synths and trackers, but i found that Fruity Loops 3.3 is for me. It's easier than others plus the interface is nice. You should check em all out by yourself and go with the one you like best.
I'm thinking after i learn to make some beat with Fruity, i'll try Reason. http://www.fruityloops.com - for FL demo http://www.propellerheads.se/products/reason/rack.html - check out the interface... you must!!

It's freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. It's not just a tracker.. its a synth, sampler, FX, and its modular! you can plug your 'machines' into each other for whatever 'route' you want!

Hmmm this isn't really digital art discussion.

Naaa, you're all wrong. The best music program is still the first and original SoundTracker for Amiga
