okay, i've been messing around with 3d stuff a bit, and was fascinated by the whole shader concept... so i started wondering, what's your take on using "shaders" in 2d art? by this, i mean layering on different levels of specularity, reflection, transparency, etc? or would it be wiser to simply do this straight up, like a traditional painting?
thanks,

...some do paint like that - using several layers through a painting. I use painter the most nowadays and tend to have only two layers... The sketch and the paintlayer. But whatever suits you Try it out and see if that way of working is something for you. I think its a very personal thing with no correct answer... Good luck!

i dont do that, but i like using layers to paint over the original painting if i'm contemplating some radical change. that way, it it's bad i can just delete it, and if it's good i can merge it down. |

Have a look at Right Hemisphere's 'Deep Paint' plug-in for Photoshop--it allows you to paint with a mixture of color, bump, and shine with a single brushstroke. Quite amazing stuff, and they give you a free three-month trial! |

sounds interesting... too bad i can't afford photoshop...
ZBrush is also pretty cool for that kind of stuff (it allows you to paint in pseudo 3d) |

So does Painter (paint pseudo 3D.. or however you want to describe it.. painting with the illusion of depth).
Here's a snip from some brush testing I did using one of Painter's Impasto Brush Variants, then painting over those brush strokes with one of the Liquid Ink Variants.
http://www.pixelalley.com/Painter-Module1-Class1/10-10-01-thick-wet-paint-colored.jpg
Working on separate Liquid Ink Layers, some of the Liquid Ink strokes were left smooth and/or colors blended; others were given a small amount of depth.
There are many other possibilities, but this little example should demonstrate Painter's thick paint stroke capabilities. |

wow, that's pretty cool stuff... i may have to seriously think about investing in painter... i'm still using painter classic (came with my intuos 6x8) coz i love the overall feel and look, but i can't stand the lack of layers, so these days i skip painter and work in PSP... how much is painter 7, on average (any college student prices? ) |
