I use the just add water tool for blending all the time in painter. They have changed the brush settings a bit through the different versions, so i'd be curious to know which version you are using. In painter 5 and earlier i think it defaults to being grainy.. so you'd need to turn down the grain in the brush settings to make it very smooth. Other than that.. also check the other brush settings - like if it is a soft or hard tip. I'm using the default one in Painter 6 and its been working great. Its subcategory is soft cover, the opacity is set around 50%... if that helps. This one doesn't even have the grain slider turned on.

If you want to paint very smoothly, be sure to try the digital airbrush in Painter, which behaves much like the Photoshop one i believe.

You might also want to try the blur brush... it's in the plugin brushes and you can access it through the Shortcut to New Brushes palette(at least in Painter 5.5). It is in the group that has a camera as an icon, which I can't think of the name of it right now. THere are several other brushes in that group that you might want to experiment with too, such as the diffuse blur and the add hue brush. I find it helpful to combine the effects of different brushes to achieve a less computerized look.

Any of you know how to use the just add water blending too in painter???
i try to use it, but results are really crappy. how cna I acheive nice smooth transitions between my colors using it??
In photoshop i use the airbrush for this, but in painter i like using the normal brushes and colors (dont use watercolor at all).
any help will be greatly apreciated, im so frustrated with not getting the colors right.

Although I don't think he mentions it in the tutorial, the brush settings he describes for his blending brush may be based on the Felt Pens' Felt Marker Variant. The reason I say that is that he taught a two day Painter class at In Depth Discussions last summer and gave us the setting adjustments for two Variants that were based on the Felt Pens' Felt Marker Variant that he said he uses for a lot of his painting. One was for laying down color and the other for blending.
