If you aren't Chinese or Asian, you probably have no idea who these two people are. They are a team of GF and BF(or husband and wife by now), and they often collaborate on pieces together. They do mostly illustration work, but do comics and conceptual art now and then. I love their work, and I just want to share some love.

They started out using traditional media(pastels, watercolor..etc), but then moved on to using painter. You really can't tell their traditional work and digital work apart anyways, so who cares.

Lots of pics, but pretty small file sizes.

BTW, they do their own individual work, but their styles are very similar. His(Ping-Fun)tends to be darker and more dramatic, while her's(Chen Hsu-Fen)tends to be softer and more pastel-like.

i knew these pics, i saw them in comickers.
their skills are amazing, even if i don't like very much their style. (too... gentle...)

by the way, Comickers is a really great japanese magazine about comics (manga, but also european and american's one).
It's in japanese (i can't read it unfortunately), but it's worth the price.
i discovered a lot af great artists with this mag, you can learn some technics, and it's very refreshing.

My problem with the artworks is that they are mostly done with watercolor(both western and chinese style)and pastels. (well, Art Center despise bothmedia a lil bit....and I got influenced by that)

Seriously, WC and pastel are 'prevalent' materials in Asian illustration business including Japan and Korea.I really haven't seen that many Asian artists who do opaque artworks with oil,acrylic or gouache. YEs, even those who use them apply the medium 'transparently'.

Personally I got this attitude like 'Watercolor is for pansies and wannabes.', partly because I am fully aware of the notable lack of illustrations by opaque medium.

And....they look 'too soft' forwestern tase,especially forthose who like Boris Vallejo and Frazetta paintings. I used to like that 'subtle' look back when I was in Korea...but not anymore.

O holy St. Spooge and Stahlberg and Manley please enlighten us by giving us your precious inputs on this, amen.

Haha, somehow I doubt Craig or Jason or Steve are gonna come on here and discount one of the major mediums of painting, anymore than discounting, say, abstract painting.

I actually have a really cool book of contemporary Chinese oil paintings from the personal collection of Robert Hefner. It's called Through an Open Door and is about 4 years old. There's some really beautiful work in there.

I wouldn't say that watercolours are for pansies... Watercolours are hard as hell to work with >_<

Do you know where I could find more of their work? I found some at manga-art.com (or whatever the address is) but the more I see, the better

If you look too much at their work, though, you'll get the "disgustingly sweet and sappy - must vomit!" kind of feeling *heh* But I still like their work

I don't mind the soft/saccharine look at all. It's a breath of fresh air from all the heavily rendered/super realistic shiny bodies of barbarians and scaley creatures we see too much of here. There is a certain elegance and romance to their work that is missing from the western stuff.

Lunatique... Thanks for sharing them with us.. I saw a lot the Chinese Pc game titles using their illustrations for their covers when i was browsing for games here in Malaysia. They instantly caught my eye..

Sweet and romantic they may be.. but i do harbor some love for their style

That's great stuff. I think I've seen their work in asian pc gaming magazines. Do you have any more links to their work? I'd like to learn more about them. They have a eurasian style that I'd like to have of my own.

The link I posted is the best one I've found. It covers just about every single piece of their work(or at least as much as I know).

Here's some info on them:

They both attended the same art school, and they probably met there. They are a couple, and they work in similar style, which lead them to collaborate as a team and publish collections together.

They are fascinated by beautiful people, especially asian, and that's why they paint/draw beautiful asian people all the time(well, it also sells very well).

There are many copycats in Taiwan copying their style because it sells. Publishers will ask a newbie illustrator to blatantly copy their style if that person wanted the job. *sigh* Chinese people in general are not very ethical when it comes to making money.

That's just incredible! It's sad that the competition is so fierce there that publishers try to make money off copycats. I guess the signature will say it all, though.

Wow.... I can't believe I've never heard of such great artists.
To state the obvious, they are really, really good.

Edit: I am looking through the website posted above with more of their pics on it, and they've done a few pictures of American celebrities (and a Canadian! Keanu Reeves).
They are so damn good I can't say it enough.

Wow pretty amazing technique. I am however a little critical of their approaches. In some of the pictures they render the faces realistically, then seem to ignore the rest of the form. That really is disappointing, because to the uninitiated it makes it look as if the face was a photo stuck on. I am being pretty picky though, and it is really only the bottom one that I am talking about.
