Hey all...
since Photoshop is so often the subject, by default many times, of posts here, I wanted to be sure those of you who are interested follow a lawsuit.
Why?
Uh, well, if you haven't heard... Macromedia is suing Adobe claiming to own the patent to Photoshop and GoLive.
I'm going to leave my first personal responses out of this, but I can't wait to read what people here have to say about it.

I don't particularly endorse the site this is from, because I have a problem with pay service news and pop-ups, but here you go, for a quick look:
http://www.salon.com/tech/wire/2001/10/19/macromedia_adobe/index.html

btw, a quick edit... those of you who are familiar with the origins and developers of P-shop will probably find this whole thing funnier and even more absurd.

wow...they want Adobe to be prohibited from selling Photoshop, period. (?) that's more cracked out than a 10.0 earthquake. If Adobe loses there's going to be some serious, serious, problems.

Photoshop was originally developed as an inhouse tool at ILM.

Patent lawsuits are silly things really.

Row.

Photoshop was originally created at ILM, courtesy of the Knoll brothers, John being the one primarily interested in the computer applications and tweaking it under various names and functional abilities. The origin of the program and its initial use are a pretty cool means of solving certain effects problems, but if you aren't into it it's probably a bit 'So what?'.
Yeah, this lawsuit is gonna be hilarious to follow to an extent, but if those jerks at Macromedia actually think they can pull this off, and worse if they found a legal means to do so, it is really gonna suck.
I've ditched the Macromedia stuff I'vd been using.

There will probably be a short time where there isn't a whole lot of news about this, but if anyone's interested I'll post a few follow-ups here.

I need and use both heavily for WebDesign and Graphics and I'm sure many others do also.

I hope to god this thing doesn't get out of hand...

These guys have always been at eachother's throats... this isn't much of a surprise to me. The whole idea is just plain silly though. Didn't one of them sue the other at some point for something like owning the patent to a crazy thing like toolbars or dockable windows?

sure did... i think around when flash 5 came out, adobe sued macromedia because of the window & swatch system they had, which was pretty much excatly like the one in photoshop. i'm not sure who one the lawsuit. i wouldn't take sides between the two because they are both excellent programs and i use them both. oh well

Anything new on this?

I find this very funny. I have to learn how to use both Macromedia and Adobe stuff in class.

Oh well we all know Macromedia is the biggest "sewer/suer" around...

You guys realize that the world would continue to exist without Photoshop, right?

I mean, I doubt Macromedia has a leg to stand on, but if something did happen to trip up Adobe, you could keep using whatever version of PS you've got, or you could use one of a dozen other paint apps that are just as good.

Damn. If you're into web design, DreamWeaver, ImageReady and PhotoShop go hand and hand. As a painter though, if the lawsuit against Adobe was successful.....I guess I'd just use PS 6 for the rest of my life. That would kind of suck though. =/ Maybe I'll just have to learn to use Painter too.

No really new news on this that I have seen. Of course we can all keep using whatever versions of PS. The idea is that this is pure bullshit on the part of Macromedia. I hope they get smacked so hard that they never recover from it. Wishful thinking...

MM is claiming to own patents on some of the features in the newer Photoshop, not the whole program.

Does anyone remember when Adobe sued MM for using the TAB (toggle tools) feature?

Ahhhh!
So, this is only particularly relevant to PS 6 features? That clears things up a bit. Has been difficult to find decent info. Anywhere you can point me to?
Yes, I recall a few nasty rounds between Adobe and MM, including what amounted to a lot of playground 'Oh yeah?' 'Yeah!" type of crap. Still, am losing a lot of respect here...
Thanks for shedding a bit of light on this...

Ridicilous, Macromedia has no knowledge whatsoever about tools like photoshop, macromedia is into vector graphics.
If macromedia wins, i'll stop using photoshop or stick to PS6 for a long time, untill Corel PhotoPaint catches up or i'll use painter or something similar.
Those pricks, adobe=photoshop and photoshop=adobe.
If that's going to change i think almost the entire digital art community will stand up and smack macromedia to the ground.
Those judges and juries have no understanding of digital art whatsoever, they easily can pick the wrong side in this battle.
Damnit, this sounds worrying.
If macromedia wins, they'll fix stuff in photoshop that isn't broken and change stuff that is there since the day photoshop was born.
They'll f*ck up photoshop, i can tell you that.
The bastards.
