most of the people here use graphic tablets, i use a wacom intuos2 tablet > www.wacom.com
i'm guessing you're using a mouse since you likely wouldn't be asking this question if you were using a tablet. i'm not trying to be rude, but helpful. with the tablet it's like using a pencil, brush, or pen so you'd just adjust it to your comfort and style. if you're using a mouse i haven't the slightest idea how to config your brushes, unless you mean spacing (tracking) or hardness.
as for custom brushes, i doubt if these guys and girls would give up their customs...that's the root of their art and style man. if you're talking about the actual manual process of making a brush, you should atleast tell us what program you're using... =. |

I use the default brushes, mostly the hard edged ones, with opacity sensitivity switched on usually, sometimes off. Wet edges off, Opacity 100%. I'm guessing this is a fairly common setting. |

Well, these are some custom brushes I occasionally use:
Truth is, though, I usually just use the round brushes; opacity 100, hardness 96, with the Colour, Opacity, and Size pressure-sensitivity options on.
The custom brushes are fun, but they look absolutely awful if you use them on their own with no modification. I always use them, erase into them, add another one, erase into THAT...to build up textures. Like you'd do with oil paint--put on the paint, scribble at it with a dry brush, add more paint, take it off, and so forth...yeah...that. |

Custom brushes are very helpful for making textures, for painting hoever they're less used if at all (unless for large textured areas again).
I use some self made brushes, most fitting to what i need (mostly a bunch of random dirt).
Here they are, i use them only for textures. Although i knwo i should make like x10 more if i wanna do textures seriously.
