I havn't really tried it before, I do painting mostly in oils etc... I also do some 3d and graphics design as you can see on my website www.rickna.com/northpole

I was wondering, when doing a digital painting, do most of you start out with a higher resolution like 2-300 DPI?
And then just decrease for 72 for net use?

Or do you start painting small?

Hey dood - nice looking stuff on your web site, but if I may - go easy on the spawned windows; it can make navigation a bit overdone.

About your questions; I typically start off with a low resolution and just ramp it up to accommodate the output. You should, however, try to determine what your output is going to be before starting. Is it print? Is it web? If you go with the print route, make sure you have the box to handle the multi-layered, high rez files.

I don't know about anyone else, but when I work in Photoshop my images are 400+ dpi. I then bring my images down for the net. I do exactly the opposite when I work in Painter. I start low... like 72 dpi and then pump it up once the basic shapes are down. Painter brush performance can be sluggish with brushes over 60-70 pixels.

For paintings I'm planning to post on my website and maybe print out around 11x17, I start with a 1000x1000 pixel image at RGB, 72 dpi for sketching. Sometimes the canvas is that size and I only use a corner of it. As soon as I have a solid sketch [heh, oxymoron] I crop off the empty space I'm not going to use and blow it up to about 1500 pixels high. From there, it depends, but I try to keep it big enough to print at a decent size.
