I'm just asking how many people is using 5.0 or 6.0. I hear lots of people saying that 5.0 is a bit better than 6.0. Can someone tell me why? |

I upgraded from 5.0 to 6.0 and to be honest with you I can't see a difference. |

If you have an AMD processor (TBird, Duron, AthlonMP or AthlonXP), I would recommend Photoshop 6.0, as it is far better optimized for those processors.
And sure it takes a while to get used to 6.0... I hated it at first, but now I'm pretty content with it.

There are small diffrences, but 6 seems to work better for me. |

I'm still using 5.0 at home, tho college uses 6.0. Blergh. I prefer 5.0, though you can get used to 6.0 with time. I also like the layout of 5.0 better.
Plus 5.0'd be cheaper now @:-) |

tyeah it took me a good 2 weeks to get familiar with 6 after using 5.5. but the interface in 6 is more effecient and the text tools are far better than PS' before it.

6.0 seems to support alot more things which I enjoy, like easy access to layer effects by simply double-clicking on the layer, and improved function of creating lines and text. Although I like the improvements, many people do not.
This is something you need to decide for yourself, whichever one you feel more comfortable with, thats your best bet ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

I switched to 6 at work, and it did take a little getting used to... once I was familiar with it, it was fine. It has a few nice additions such as the web palette and the above mentioned changes to the layer effects.
I have not switched to it at home however, and do not think I will. My main reason for this is that my web optimiser of choice is fireworks... I'm using fw3 and with ps6 I cannot import a psd and keep the layers intact as I can with 5. I'm assuming that adobe meesed with 6 so people would be more likey to use imageready as opposed fw.
Though I imagine macromedia will remedy this with the next release of fw(if it isn't already out) |

I'm fine with 6.0.1 now, but there's one thing that bothers me a lot. The guides won't snap on a pixelbase, so they can be placed slicing even one pixel in the middle (which doesn't work naturally except of making your selections inaccurate). I don't see the sense in that and it's pretty annoying when doing layout-stuff.
Does anybody know how to fix this? |

My computer got a virus... so I built a new one... when I told my b/f I wanted PS on it he put 6.0 instead of 5.5 which I love so much... now 6.0 is F##king up on me. It freezes and won't allow me to run filters.
And I'm not doing big projects either. Maybe someday I might get use to it...
Maybe...
someday...
Umm......
Please don't hold your breath for it though.... |

I used to work with v 5.0 now 5.5 and had a brief endeavor with version 6. I wasn't prepared for such a big change from version 5 and was taken aback by all the shortcuts being changed...
I mean, x, b, j, m, l, v, e, are keyboard shortcuts I use ALL the time and being impared so much while at work was frustrating as it was gobbing valuable time and causing much frustration. I also think the Brush Palette was great even tho it may take a lot of screen space. But I setted the shortcut 'tab' to my downward stylus pen to have full view without cumbersom tool & co palettes.
Anyways, I gave up after 20 minutes (I got lots of patience.. but not at work ) but I'll eventually evolve to Photoshop 6 one day.. when it'll be an absolute necessity..! Heck, I'd still be in version 4 if I didn't had to format
I remember nearly de-installing win95 when I switched from win 3.1 .... but here we are today so.. |

I have both 5.5 and 6.0 on my comp. and have to tell you - I never was able to get used to 6.0. It HAS some good features, but change of shortcuts and overall interface keeps me away. I use the sixth only for certain features. sounds stupid? maybe it is.
god, seems that im too lazy to learn almost from scratch. I just love 5.5. |

roundeye: Good news, i found a solution to the problem in the adobe user-forums:
"but try holding SHIFT while placing your guides at high zoomlevels. This will snap the guide to the pixels, instead of placing them on top of them."
"This will only work if the rulers are set to pixels in the preferences. The guides snap to rulers while holding down shift."
Ahhh, relief at last...
Still I wonder what the use of placing a guide on top of a pixel is... |

Would you guys suggest having both 5.5. and 6 on your computer (giving you have room) if you like 5.5 more? |

Jabberwocky: I don't think having both in use makes much sense. Two sets of shortcuts and different menues will cause a lot of confusion at the least. And staying with 5.5 might be okay, rather a question of personal preference, I'd say. I for one like most of the new features in 6.0 a lot.
Keeping 5.5 installed while adapting to 6.0 sounds like a good idea though, cause you can do things the way you are used to, if you run into any problems. |

I have been using 6.01 pretty much since it came out, I love it. There are a couple of funky things here and there, and by far the most annoying is when sometimes it mistargets a window when running an action. This has cost me hours of works once, but in all the time I have used it, it has only happened about 3 times. Overall, the new features are worth the upgrade, IMHO.
(for one, I think the way the text tools work now is much better than in 5.5) |
