Hello. Some of you may recognize me from the art forums, I post critiques and work occasionally. Anyhoo, that's not what this is about.

I am wondering if anyone here goes to Savannah College of Art and Design here, or knows some one who has, etc, etc. I am a senior in high school, and am In the process of putting my works together for a portfolio. I want to go to art school, and hopefully work in the illustration buissness, or sequantial art buissness doing concept art for games, storyboarding and freelance work.

Well does anyone go there? If so do you like it? In the same vein, does anyone go to any other schools they could recommend?

Ya never know, perhaps I will see one of you there in the next year.

Thanks for your time,
-jono

Try the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. I'll be graduating this semester. It may be expensive but it's definetly worth it (use loans if you can't afford tuition). Anyway they turn you into a highly skillful, disciplined artist. A word to the wise, don't apply if your not ready to work your ass off and learn. Go to their website here>>

I have a niece who is a High school senior who plans on attending Scad. She went to their High School senior program this past summer and loved it. She is there this weekend for a program. Great school and its grads have access to great jobs. I worked with her by teaching her Photoshop and Painter. She got A's on her Photoshop work this past summer.

Hello from SCAD!
The school is great, the departments are good, especially in the Illustration and Sequential fields. I like it a lot, but is there anything specific you would like to know? You'd be getting the full recources here, professors are top notch, as well as the buildings/equipment/etc. We're located in a very pretty historical town (like something right out of Europe), umm, well I could go on for hours but if you could be more specific that would help.

[edit] Also, I am a 3d art student, but I am also thinking about a minor in Illustration (it really helps for the game industry or movie industry, getting jobs with presentation, etc). I have a few sequential art friends, who's skill shot through the roof after a year here, mainly because of the professor's input, and their practice.

Hehe, Lithius611. I know where you live! lol.

Jucas:
You should check it out. If it fits you, go for it. Make sure they have what you want, so you are comfortable with what you can do there.

If the degree is not a concern and all you need is to learn 'classical' drawing and painting, try local ateliers first if you can.

If you were a resident in California or NY, state universities are cheaper alternatives. Well, they are not so bad. It's all up to your dedication. About Art Center.... I know several 'deserters' like me who got beefs with ACCD.

Even the name of that school creeps me out... It's like a shellshock to a Nam vet. -_-; Oh, It IS a shellshock to me.

My name is Peter Choi. Ask about my name to people graduating this semester. Some people will raise their eyebrows and say "How did you know that psycho?!"

SCAD and Art Center are really popular references... is anyone familiar with NYC Art schools, particular SVA? (School of Visual Arts)... I plan on transfering into as a Computer Graphics major and a fellow student told me SVA is weak on the latest technology but great for illustration.. which surprises me since I've often thought they were a top graphic design school of the city....

Any help would be appreciated

Art Center is for Borgeois.

Sucks to be you Peter. What was your major and what didn't you like about the school ? Please be specific. And about dedication, thats what it takes to stay in the school, not desert it. If you wanted to play or 'party', then you should've looked elsewhere. Later.

My major was Illustration. I started attending ACCD in Fall 98. Well, first I wanted to do CG animation so I applied for Cal Arts, and didn't get in. My whole family moved down to So Cal to support me. Before that I lived in Cupertino, CA for 2 and a half years.

My strongest was concept design. My figure drawing was mediocre and totally different from typical ACCD style, and my painting skill was (and still is) disastrous. Well, I was known as the robot guy, because I drew robots all the time. At this point, I realized that designing a robot can be really difficult depending on the concept. I also realized that anime mecha design doesn't make much sense, in terms of joint movements and motion range. Yes, designing the joints and articulations are the toughest part of mecha design, as far as I figured out.

naturally, entertainment was my option.

I got kicked out in June '99. It was a messy incident. Saying something about blowing up the school was only a part of the reason why I got suspended and eventually expelled officially in June '01.

I guess you are in illustration major. Ask around what really happened. That will be very interesting to you.

Finally, let me sing the Air Force song.

"Up we go into the wild blue yonder, shot down and tortured by Iraqi soldiders~..."

Wow, you have a great family. Man that sucks, I now understand why you could have acted the way you did.

I understand, Art Center facuty do teach a specific way of figure drawing and it is lots of work. I remember I had to draw a 550 figure drawing scroll with detailed figures and it was a pain in the arse. I admit the school has its flaws(like other schools) but I still like it for the skills I've learned.

I will ask around, and why don't you send me a private message with who you used to hang with, I'm guessing I probably most likely know someone you know. Later.

i go to sva, illustration major, it's pretty good, the students are better than the teachers, i've learned so much from my fellow students. the teachers are working professionals, there's not much in terms of computers, though i heard they're adding more computer classes. there's some really good traditional techique teachers, some big name painters. and nyc is pretty good too.

Jr here hasn't taken many computer classes, you see hehe....I'm also an illustration major (in his class actually). The computer art department just got a whole slew of top of the line great computers with all the latest software....you couldn't ask for more. They are a bit lenient towards Macs (not winning any points with me), but their PC resources are extremely impressive. The way I see it: Illustration has great instructors and not so good facilities, whereas Computer Art has great facilities, and not so good instructors (no....not you Tim, if you're reading this...hehe). The Illustration and animation depts Are very very scared of computers and technology however...Which can be annoying when you do Illustration/animation digitally, then have to show your instructors in a physical sort of way (print-outs, VHS) because they're too traditional to have the technical resources available in their classroom....but them's tha brakes....It would probably change by the time you were to graduate anyway.
