First, you're better off if you are sure to use a mouse. Second, I would scan a simple line drawing in, place it as its own layer, either in illustrator or photoshop, then work on a layer above it. If you have illustrator, you are probably better off learning there. They are intimidating at first, but in a relatively short while you find they become intuitive. You just have to put some time in becoming comfortable with how much control you actually have, since at first you may think you 'can't do anything with them'. Trust me, you can.
Remember to use as few points as possible to create a shape, and also that you have a lot of control by using the handles. Learn to use the various selection features of whichever version of Illustrator you have, if you are using it. Again, much easier to learn in illustrator. There are probably a ton of tutorials online, and perhaps QT or other format movies.
