Some people you can check out for these things:

Wayne Douglas Barlowe here is good for monsters. http://www.artsforge.com/gallery_new/giger/barlowe_main.html
Giger too I guess.

For people? Too many to choose from. Adam Huges is my current favorite, Alex Ross is great too, Frazetta, so many others.

Mechs? Also too many to chose from. Any famous manga or anime artist. Doug Chiang? Not really my field.

Tips: just keep on doing it. Draw from photos or from the art you like the most. In the beginning it's ok to copy the masters, as long as you just do it for training - just discard these efforts when your done, and start a new one. This will soon help you to not become too attached to any single drawing, but become more free and daring.
Eventually, when you feel that copying is getting too easy, start doing some stuff of your own. Most important: keep that pen or pencil or stylus in motion, making marks.
The more the better, and have patience, the process takes years.
