The creation of the temp files should not slow down Photoshop, espeically with the amount of RAM you have. I'm running 512 megs on this machine and I've had temp files reach 300+ megs without slowdown at all.
What I could recommend is either, if you have mutliple partitions on your HD, to change the scratch disk settings in the perferences to something other than Startup.
I would also recommend defraging the paritions that Photoshop is trying to use for scratch disks.
Hopefully that will help!

aha, so THAT's what purge do.
i have wondered about that for some time now...
i agree with wootkoos about avoiding startup as scratchdisc. my photoshop got significally faster when i changed that (accually, photoshop even recommended that) |

All versions of Photoshop above 3 write information to a scratch disk regardless off how physical RAM you have. With the introduction of the History function and multiple undos, this can be especially taxing on older machines. Thankfully, in their infinite wisdom, Adobe has also included the "Purge" command. Look for it in the "edit" menu. It helps clear those excessively large undo states.
In the future, try limiting your number of undos in your preferences to try to keep that temp file manageable.

Ah, the temp files. I've had "fun" with them.
Often, If Photoshop crashes these temp files are not cleaned up by the program as usual , but left on the hard drive. Unfortunately, on Mac's at least, these are hidden files that can only be found by searching the hard drive for "photoshop temp" files. I've often found 2gig temp files hidden on my hard drive, so if you're running a Mac it's definately worth searching for them once in a while.
I know this is not directly related to Magicmans problem, but it's an interesting point about the temp files none the less. |

the latest version 6.0.1 fixes that. when u quit PS6 the scratch disks are automatically cleared, even if the finder won't. it's now automatic. i had expirences with huge temp files up to 2 gigs. and i have a 10 gig hd so i hate too get under 5 gigs.
