It's the laziness of it all which irks me no end. I got an e-mail the other day, and it went like this:
socar miles,
ur sight sux
ur linx r broken
-j
First of all: No shit, Sherlock. What was your FIRST clue? My site...not 'sight'...has a little notice on it right now, stating that it is...under development.
Second, and more to the point: What in the hell is 'ur'?? It looks like something orcs would say in AD&D. For instance:
OGG: Hello, Ur. <grunt> How's things?
UR: Much good, Ogg. <snort> You? Ur.
OG: Me too. Ur ogg snort grunt.
UR & OG: UR! OGG! UR! OGG! UR UR UR!!!!
I thought this thread could use some (questionable) humour. Sorry!

I have to agree with Frost and others, that it is a tad annoying to see Europeans speaking much better english than most Americans I see on the net. I think that part of it is indeed the fact that Europeans are taught it as a second language while we here tend to be on our high horse and blow off our english classes.
I must say that what Ivey says could be part of the problem. I actually had this very same conversation with my old roommate over the weekend during which he reminded me that most of his problems come from being dyslexic...he says he's always had problems getting the your and you're and the their, they're and there's correct. I think what would help is if people would think 'you are' instead of 'your' and see if it makes sense in the sentence...helps me out at least. Maybe half the Americans on the net are dyslexic?
I don't buy that there could be that many people with a learning disability though. Most of it truly is ignorance and laziness. Personally, I'm not grammatically perfect but at least I take a second to read back over my posts to see if I find any glaring problems before I hit that Post Reply button.
People give that whole 'what matters is that you get the point across' arguement when a grammar nazi comes along. Pardon the phrase but I think that's bullshit as well. When I read through someone's illegible post I have to stop in mid-read just to figure out what the hell someone just said. In other words it slows me down and with the amount of information flooding the web I don't have time to stumble over every single poorly written post. Think about it...because one person didn't take the time or effort to re-read their post and ensure that it at least reads fairly well a multitude of people out there have their time wasted when they try to read that post. Or if you're like me you just skip it and move on If someone isn't going to take the time to get their point across legibly then I usually don't have time to decipher what it is they're trying to say.
Oh, I can look past the misspellings and the occasional grammatical blunder because I make them, too, but when it comes down to every other word being fucked up I just shake my head and move on. This means that your message isn't getting across which is why I say that the excuse mentioned above falls upon deaf ears here (or blind eyes, being on the net and all ).
In the end, I like to think of grammar checking as simply a consideration to other people that are taking the time to read what I type.

I have to agree with Flint
But imho europeans speak better because here we usually learn more than one language. I'm learning right now english and french as well as I improve my spanish, and those three languages have lots of things in common so when you have a problem you have two different references to correct yourself.
Hmm... I don't know if this makes sense. It's early in the morning... |

Personally, I think the most important reason non-native English speakers often have good spelling skills is simply that we learn the language more by reading and writing than orally. Most spelling errors seem to come from knowing how a word is pronounced, but not how it's written. That's why 'their' 'there' 'they're' etc. get mixed up. We non-natives don't have that problem, since we usually learn the written language first (and better) than the spoken language. Ragnarok's point about knowing several languages is good, too. I studied Latin for 3 years, and while I hated it, there are so many Latin-based words in the English language, it had to help my spelling.

And that's why, Affected, we spanish people usually have more problems than the rest of europeans learning languages, because in spanish it's pronuncied the same way it's written.
Although, now I think it twice, we keep learning from books instead of orally...
Oh well, then we aren't good students |

We definately need to work on our spelling because really the only representation for what kind of person we have online is how we write. But it is a bit unrealistic to expect everything to be perfect when people are typing. Some small mistakes such as switching around letters or dropping one off are not at all uncommon. Don't worry too much about it, but yeah, some of those people are really in need of some spelling assistance. Whoever was the one who said something about 14 year olds, you're wrong. I am better than all of you. Unfortunately at spelling, not at art :-) As a side note, I hate people who use stupid smiley faces after every sentence. |

Everyone makes typos, snowman, some more than others. We don't all spend all our lives strapped to a keyboard.
Typos have absolutely nothing to do with the vast amounts of ignorance and/or laziness that bombard the average web surfer on a daily basis, especially if said surfer spends a lot of time in various game communities. Worse is the fact that in a lot of places, it's intentional. Don't get me started on the lameness of 1337.
As for smileys after every sentence, well I have little choice.
You see, I'm English. As such, I have an English sense of humour. It's dry, it's sarcastic, and it's often misinterpreted by a lot of Americans as being insulting and rude. So more often than not, I end every other paragraph with an emoticon of some form or another. When I first got on the web, a decade ago, I didn't bother. I couldn't care less if some self important frat boy on the other side of the planet took what I said the wrong way. And why should I? But that's changed. In part, because I'm ten years older, I've matured (a bit). Mostly, though, because I simply can't be bothered with wasting time clearing up the mess after someone reads hostility into a remark that was intended to be no more than a joke in passing. It gets impossible to discuss anything when you have to follow up every other thing you write with three more messages explaining which parts were serious, which parts were not, and what each metaphor really means. So now, whenever I write something that stands a chance of being misinterpreted (which is pretty often), I follow it up with a , , , , or . :|, :d, and :/ also get a look in. |

I understand what you're saying about stupid people not getting jokes. <--- Look I said you're not your yay! I usually use it now to test how dumb someone is. In a recent conversation with a blonde, I asked her if any of the stereotypes of blondes applied to her. She then replied "What are stereotypes?" After a gave her a definition, she was even more confused. Some people don't deserve the help of a little smiley face. |

Forgive me for showing off, but I have a degree in English, 2 other degrees, and used to teach English in Japan, but have never been to a typing school.
My typing sucks.
Lots of people's typing sucks. Det gor detsamma.
Doesn't mean what they say isn't important.

typo dave: no, does not mean that its not important, but if you are english teacher and you say you have grammar problems then there is something wrong- no?
[I am not exactly sure what you meant with "your typing sucks"]
Lets be honest.. we all judge people by the way they speak our language.
If someone comes up to you and says
"Me be vehhri indeliguent men. Me nows e lat!"
would it be easy to believe him?
Typos happen.. everyone forgets a letter or hits one key off to the right or to the left instead of the right one.
But i think its not that hard to judge if something is a typo or a spelling problem.
I dont know how its in the US, but when you try to get a job at a company here in Europe and you send them a letter full of bad spelling they will probably decide against you. Just because its the first impression that they get from you.
[of course this might be a bit different for graphics jobs where spelling is not that important.. job wise] |

Nex - I'm actually a lawyer with a Masters degree and I sit around all day and correct other people's legal advice (and grammar)on intellectual property issues.
My point is - this is an informal forum. I make typos here and nothing turns on it. I don't make typos in my professional work. But, here, if someone's opinion is interesting, I'm not about to fault them for their grammar. |

ah, you must understand that spelling mistakes and inproper grammer usage by Americans usually comes about by:
1. Stupidity and apathy - there are lots of college-educated adults in our country that are... surprise! stupid. That's what you get when money buys you anything and the money is being spread around.
2. They know better but use 'AOL'speak. There's really no excuse for this, but it is dangerously common.
Yes, I'm embarrassed to have citizenship in this country. It is the land of opportunity... if you want to be a fat, degenerate, desensitized slob. Although, a lot of people would argue it's better then dodging rockets in the street, but I'm sure that's not *every* other country... sigh |

Yeah yeah, spelling. Bad spelling is lazy. Intentional mispellings for the sake of conveying a nonstandard pronunciation are alright. Biznatch.
Word.
