I thought it would be pretty cool to learn to draw comics. I've heard that a great book is How to Draw the Marvel Way or something like that. Does anyone have any other good books in mind that could help me? thx. |

understanding comics by scott mccloud
&
Comics and sequential art by will eisner
end of story. that's all you need. these books will help you understand the science of making comics, and that's the only and most important thing you have to know. |

Scott's books are excellent for describing the philosophy/structure of comics, but for nitty-gritty stuff about art & artists I'd recommend 'Artists on Comics Art' by Mark Salisbury, pub. by Titan Books. Lots of emphasis on thumbnails, page layout and so on.
Also Comics Journal is essential reading.

Yeah the Marvel book is pretty good, I read it a while ago and it's probably still in my house somewhere. It's got alot of good pointers that specifically apply to comic art, as well as some stuff such as "how to draw." I'm not sure how great it is at explaining all that drawing stuff, but if you're trying to create comic books, it can be a fairly valuable source of things one might describe as "tips and tricks."
My two bittles. |

Get the Will Eisner book, "Sequential Art" it has some very good pointers on how to create sequential art, how the frames move and how to keep pace and such.
At least that's my suggestion, How to draw the marvel way is a limited book but if you are starting I think it's a good start. I started myself with a book called "How to draw superheroes and villains" by Christopher Hart. It's pretty useless now but it helped me at first and got me interested in art. |
