Hi!

Just wondering if anyone else has these problems? It seems to happen after working in Painter for a while (say 1-2 hours). Restarting the program sometimes gives a new crash very soon and restarting the computer is the only solution. This happened with v6.03. I installed 6.1 yesterday and haven't spent so much time with it but it hasn't crashed yet...

Hi,

I'm not using Win2K (still Win98) but just today someone using it assured me Painter 6.1 is stable on Win2K.

Things that come to mind as possible solutions (in combination probably):

Pre-built Brush File has become too large and needs to be deleted (found in the main Painter folder, delete after Painter is shut down and it regenerates next time Painter is launched).

Defrag and run ScanDisk at least once a week.

Clear out Temp files.

Clear browser cache frequently (if you're on the Web a lot, maybe several times a day).

When Painter begins to bog down, quit and reboot. That often gets things going again when nothing else will and it beats crashing in the middle of a project and losing work.
(Save frequently anyway.)

Turn off resource hogging programs that you don't need to be running while working in Painter.

If, after installing the 6.1 patch, you still have a problem, it could be that the Uninstall and reinstall, then 6.1 patch installation wasn't done correctly. Here are the steps along with a precautionary backup of the default Painter files.

To Uninstall Painter 6, reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch, and
create a backup copy of the Painter 6 default files:

1. Move any files you created to a folder outside of the main Painter
folders.

2. Uninstall Painter 6.

3. Manually delete any remaining Painter 6 installed folders and files.

4. Reboot.

5. Install Painter 6, then immediately install the Painter 6.1 patch.

6. Reboot.

7. Before launching Painter even one time, create a new folder outside
of the Painter 6 folders and name it something like "Painter 6 Default
Files Backup".

8. Go to the main Painter 6 folder and copy all of the default Painter 6
files.

9. Go to the "Painter 6 Default Files Backup" folder and paste the
copied default Painter 6 files into it.

Now you have a backup set of Painter 6 default files so when one of them
becomes corrupted, which happens on occasion, **with Painter closed** go
to the "Painter 6 Default Files Backup" folder, make a copy of the
appropriate file, then go to the main Painter 6 folder and paste the
copied file into it. This will save your having to Uninstall and
reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch again if a file becomes
corrupted... and save frustration, too!

Hmm, haven't had any problems with Painter on Win2K.

Mind you, Photoshop 4 crashes as soon as I start drawing with the paintbrush.

Not helpful.
