The Dodge and Burn method...
Do you use it?
If so, why?
If not why?
The Dodge and Burn method is what use. Im trying to see if there are better methods out there to coloring your picture. |

I avoid it for the most part. It generates out-of-gamut colors (bad for offset printing) and visually it's pretty easy to detect.
If I'm feeling lazy about mixing my own colors, I sometimes switch my brush to "multiply" or "screen" for roughly the same effect, only it's a little more controllable and hard to detect.

I don't use it because it doesn't give you any control on what you do, and because lights and shadows look very wrong when done with D&B
Avoid it at all cost.

I use it when needed, it is handy if you paint your drawing and add some shiny stuff on the drawing, but also there are many techno graphics on which the burn and dodge option can be used.. |

HEHE!!! I suck.. I use it all the time..
ITs quite the time savor if you are looking for that look.
But I wouldn't recommend someone who has not dealt with much color mixing to use it readily.
I assume that it will turn into a pattern.
Rather you should experiment with many digitized mediums. There are many ways to perform a task.
But for Realism there are many values of color that are required to be mixed to give depth and lividness to ones composition.
HEHE SORry !!If I sound like some teacher... I'm not.. FAr from it.
this is my first post HA

I dont use the typical dodge and burn method I like the dodge and burn layer setings better. Or take an unshaded color picture, make a copy of it, desaturat the first copy, set one that still colored to the "color" layer seting and then dodge and burn the desaturated copy. then merge them together when you like it. I never let the dodge/burn tool ever touch my colors directly. |

I use the HSB sliders to pick all my colours and values. gives the most control.
I have noticed that D+B can give some interesting results. but only if you know exaclt what you want. faustgfx does some real nice stuff with it, but most of what I've seen is B+W which is a different ball game to colour.
I would rank it as a "pro tool" (along with 99% of the filters in PS). that is to say, only to be used when you are experianced enough with the basics of drawing and painting to be in control of the results the tool is going ot give. otherwise it's just going to end up as a crutch, and if you want a different effect it's not going to let you go there. |

yeah. pretty much the only reasonable way to color burn/dodged stuff is with layer modes, which stinks, but _i_ i like it, so therefore it is the coolest method of working ever. *nods* |

Yes, SCREEN and MULTIPLE are the absolute best when adding light/dark areas to your work. Use Dodge and Burn only sparingly. |

It's nice for comic coloring, and colored metallic surfaces. I don't ever use it though, except for photo stuff. I used to use 'screen' a lot.. it comes up with the right color for highlighting (lighter and less saturated color). Not much anymore.. I want more control over my colors than that.
