I see everyone talking about getting his drawing books but what is good about him or his books as opposed to some other artists books? Please tell me more!
Thanks ahead of time for your response,

Andrew Loomis Figure drawing book is probably the best and most informational book around.
Anthony scanned the book and had it posted for a while but took it down.. I dont have the new link to it but Ill post it if I run across it again.
in the meantime do a search for it.
[edit]here it is. http://www.yoyodyne.net/ its called the "loomis project"

Loomis is revered and sought after because:
1)His understanding of illustration, perspective, and figure drawing is pretty much unmatched.
2)He wrote a series of instructional books that were incredibly informative and helpful for aspiring artists and professional artists alike.
3)Not only did he know how to draw/paint/teach figure drawing, he knew how to make them ATTRACTIVE, as opposed to Hogarth's ugly monsters, or Bridgeman's sketchy/blocky things.
4) He taught figure drawing without DISTORTING the human anatomy, as many other figre drawing authorities did.
5)His books are long discontinued. Very valuable, and very hard to find. Only a few have been reprinted.
I'm sure there are other reasons. Help me out, folks. |

umm, i dont know too whats the hype bout loomis.
i've read a german book about anatomy, which described every f***ing muscle, bone etc...
it was something around 5 times the size of loomis's book but it had it's use
the loomis book seems way too much "recipe"-like to me. its not bad for some quick information but does not give the real in-depth info.
so, if you want to go the hard way, get a book about "professional" anatomy and download the loomis book somewhere because of some real useful sections in it.
but in my case, most of the anatomical knowledge is "wasted" because i like to draw a manga-like style. k, it's not really wasted but you don'T see very much of it in the final product |

I like Hogarth too but I am going to use Loomis. Hogarth is still in print while Loomis is not.....I wonder why that is?
I took a look at his book and I like it. I think that I can get alot of use out of it. |

I wouldn't call it hype. Loomis was a very well respected illustrator during his career and he was one of the few that was willing to take the time and put his knowledge down on paper. The methods he employed were very much the same methods that many of his contemporaries and colleagues used like Rockwell, Elvgren, Leyendecker, Cornwell, etc... His books aren't the end all be all to defining illustration, but they're damn close. |
