Hi, i have a few artsy questions i could do with someone answering, or lots of you asnwer so as i can get a wide rang of opinions...thanks...
1) whenever i draw something in photoshop, i can never get anyone to notice a specific light source - people complain that every shape on what i draw has a light source... BUT, how then do i colour and shade parts of a body or whatever, without making it look like there is lots of light sources? IE, i need to show light on each shape so as to make that shape look 3D??? anyone understand?
2) also, when making a new document, what sizes do you all make the document, because on a post about that serpant and dragon thing, there was a closeup pic or part of the mountain and it was VERY big on the screen, yet in the zoomed out version, the mountain was only small? obviously you can get more detail in if you make everything larger, but if i did that i would lose control of all the sizes of completley everything! so how do you all do it? i know its something to do with resolution, but how do i change the resolution of an image in PS, as when making a new document it only asks for image size?
If anyone can answer these questions and/or give me other pointers to painting in PS, PLEASE let me know what your suggestions are. Thanks!

1st Q, show us some pics of what you are talking about. hard to understand what you mean. you probably need to do some more basic dreawing/traditional stuff. look at real life/photos to see how light reacts to objects (that or some really good paintings).
2nd Q, Think in Pixels all the time when doing things digitaly. even if it's for print the pixels are what counts. read the Photoshop manual, it explains the relationship between Pixels, resolution, image size etc. (least I think so). people get supprisingly confused about what all these things are at first.
basicly I would use the biggest file size you can, it lets you put more detail in and lets you do it with more freedom. but your comp will limmit how big you can go. it is not uncommon now that I am running a fast system to go upto 4000 pixels (in one or more dimension) on most of my stuff. bigger things might go up and beyond 6000 pixels. it is not really needed, to go that high. but it makes things easier and I know it won't slow things down. work out how large you can go with your system.
you can change the resolution and image size of a document at and stage as well as when you create it. "READ THE MANUAL". |

If you are wondering how to handle the high resolutions from a painting poerspective. I wrote some stuff in this thread
http://www.sijun.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=5&t=003621
quote:
there are 2 views of the same pic if anyone is wondering. (to get a new one go View-new view) this plus the nav alows me to see the same pic from three different perspectives. you always need to see the whole thing. I work on the big view and the smaller one I set to show me what I'm working on at a smaller size (for when you have it zoomed all the way up so that an eye fills your screen)
this is vital for me in telling what is going on. otherwise everything get's lost when you zoom up.

Thanks Rinaldo! That was a HUGE help!!!
Also your first post was great to tell me what pixel sizes i should be working at. in the past ive usually just made them all 1024x768 and drawn an image and coloured it zooming in. this way (your way) will work much better and your hit the nail on the head about losing where you are. Thanks again
