Hi ya, got a quick question for all of you out there that are IN the game industry. I was asked to do some freelance work for a game. 2D art. I was asked what I charge. being my first game job I wasnt sure....I know about illustration, and such, but not freelance for games...i am sure it is quite different. So if anyone has ANY information that can help me It would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know much about freelance work, but the latest Game Developer magazine has an article about the kind of pay you can get for various jobs in the industry. Not exactly what you're looking for, but it might give you something to go on.

... And if you can't find a copy of Game Developer anywhere, the article will probably be posted on www.gamasutra.com within the next month.

Art --

The Graphic Artists' Guild pricing book might help here, and maybe not. They have some pricing structures for interactive media and animation that might be helpful.

Given this situation (and I hope to be, one day soon), I would definitely consider specific pieces as individual illustrations. A character skin would be like a small full-color illustration, a texture set would be like a full-page spread. You should charge based on the size, complexity, usage, and especially for changes made after the fact. If you've worked on illustrations before, you should have no problem comparing.

Good Luck!
