the problem with using one special brush for a tree is that leaves are a lot more random than that brush is gonna get. i don't know anyway to conveniently rotate brushes. i just use a variety of brushes + eraser. |

I'm with Icannon on this one, however Painter6 might do the job better. Heres some quickies on how I do tree's in photoshop (with thanks to Ceenda for the information he provided earlier).
First of all, get your basic silloheute drawn. I suggest you draw the understructure of the tree first, but dont draw every branch.. thats to much work. Just give a suggestion of the major branches which will carry the most weight. Second, make brush strokes as shown in Step1. Group them in masses, but leave some white areas to give suggestion to groups and spaces.
Secondly, define your lightsource, and use the same brush motions to hatch away the light bouncing off the leaves. I should of added a shadow, but I was lazy. You could draw the shadow on the ground with the same technique, however.
Different tree's will have different arrangements of leaves, so dont be afraid to use a photo as reference to understand the structure. |

There is a book called "Bert Monroy: photorealistic techniques with photoshop and illustrator" and it has a really good example on how to do trees - from leaves and foliage right through to trunks and bark. I highly recommend the book. |

Well, here's a quick tree sketch...I later used part of it as a background for another picture. It was done using just the standard Photoshop 5.5 brushes, and the Airbrush and Paintbrush tools. I find that suggesting the textures rather than either drawing them all in by hand or using a textured brush works best for me--it avoids that cheesy texture-fill/spraypaint stencil look.
I'd put up a step-by-step, but the layered version is on my other computer.... |

From my ill-fated 500 directory (what's left of it)
Take a photo, or better yet, look at, some trees and blur it a lot (squint) Paint that!
Trees have are very specific in their major forms, from type to type. Leaves do not exist!
edit-learn to spelll. Nice sketch, Socar MYLES. I like grey. This was inspired by a Dean Cornwell Illo.
