That's a pretty vague discription! I'd probably equate it to graphic design, page layout, pamphlet, newsletter design, that sort of thing. I could be way off though. |

I try to stay away from jobs whose titles I don't understand. For instance, an Effluence Throughput Supervisor could turn out to be the guy who unclogs the toilets. Who knows?
Elastimetric Tensioning Device = Rubber Band
Who knew? |

you're fucked because of the following reasons
- you're 15
- your typing is worse than SuPeR_DrAwEr's
- you're going to a job interview
- you should probably find out what "Janitor" does before you have the interview so it won't come as a surprise that "Janitor" is the guy who cleans the place..
find a way to get rid of these ..mis-points and then try again. |

hmm, I could be mistaken, but I think he's talking about some sort of a job shadowing educational program, where he goes to find out about a certain type of work.
In which case, I don't understand why your being interviewed.. so I'm confused, but good luck, nonetheless. :\ |

Do you know anything else about the company or the position you are interviewing for? The more information you have (like you're trying to gather here) the better off you'll be. What do they do? Where are they located? How long have they been in business? Do they have a website? How many people work there? Carpet or hard wood floors? Casual attire, business attire, casual business attire? Bagel Wednesdays, Beer Bash Fridays?
The fact that you are not conveying the details necessary for us to give you better advice is a sign that you are not prepared. "Professional Design" could mean many things, like ppl here have already suggested. One thing you can count on though, "they" will expect a clean and well organized portfolio containing your best work. If you really have no idea what kind of design this job might cover, then bring a mixed bag. Some print work, web design, graphic design, evidence that you know Quark/Photoshop/Illustrator, and maybe some drafting.
Make a nice resume with cover letter, ah wait, England. What are they called there? Oh yeah, a CV. Make it sharp and easy to read, spell check it, have your mom proof it.
Dress spiffy. When in doubt, wear a suit. (ugh)
Since you're only 15, this is for school, and even if you get it you're only there for 2 weeks...have fun with it. Don't stress out, take it as a learning experience and be humble. Try to remember the questions you're asked for future reference. Prepare a couple of questions for them, but leave out things like how much the job pays.
Cheers. |

gowansy: Back the hell off for five minutes and give the guy a chance!!! Your not helping (but then you know that I'm picking)
OK so he's got himself in a little bit of a pickle and needs some help. Damn I was 15 once,
First piece of advice; Don't freak. It's a learning experience and your not going to die or lose your only income if you fail. Don't forget this.
Second piece of advice: gather as much intelligence as you can, for this you need to talk to people directly conected to the place. If you have an interview at 10am, then a phone call to the receptionist at 9am isn't going to hurt your chances!!!!
Third piece of advice: It's not an interogation, Calm and Confident is the best you can do. If you look like your confident and speak as such (even though what you say isn't much, the way you say it will make a difference) you can sell ice to eskimo's and bullshit to cattle farmers.
Fourth piece of advice: You need to plan these things, Coming here for advice was a good thing, but even the guru's here need info to work with. Give yourself time to prepare. That way the above three "cramming' techniques aren't needed.
Good luck and let us know how it goes >> if you fail people will laugh but let us know anyway. I'd be interested. |

Nothing specially for applying as a designer, but general rules, some of them mentioned already. We went through that at school recently, even though most of us will go to college before anyway.
Wear a suit if possible, definitly no jeans or T-Shirts. A suit would be the best solution, however if you feel really uncomfortable in it, rather wear something else before you mess up because of thinking on how much you hate that suit.
Only shake hands if the person who's taking your application offers his hand. It's a kind of rule - the person of higher rank has to offer the hand(e.g. the woman to the man, the elder to the younger), and in that case that's definitly not you.
Look into the eyes of the person you're talking to. I know that when feeling uncomfortable one's nails or even shoes become incredibly interesting - but your opposite's eyes is what you should look at.
In the same category is chewing on your nails or finding something incredibly important to play with in your hands/making noise with your fingers on the desk. This happens when one is nervous but makes a very bad impression.
Try to focus on the questions you're asked. Don't take it away from the topic and end up babbling anything else but what you were asked.
Anyway, I wish you good luck and let us know how it went! |
