Occasionally, when starting a new patch grid the handles become stiff/lock when i havent selected lock or anything. WHY is this? Is it a bug? Its really winding me up. |

Could be a few reasons, sometimes when you click on the bezier handle, the handle is too close to the vertex axis, so it locks it, you need to zoom in more for that.
OR it could be that your move-tool is locked on a particular axis, x, for example. make sure you have the axes you are working on unlocked, this is at the top of he screen.
It's not a bug, it's just bloody anoying, as I've had the same thing happen.
(when I say locked, I mean the program has locked it by default-even if you changed it before)

Me experienced but i figured it out.
There are 3 handles in total. There's an X handle and there's a Y handle. And there's an XY handle to control both wich is really hard to figure out. It sorta look like this _|

in max4 they messed up with the default options, so to fix the gizmo axis go to your 3d max dir and open 3dsmax.ini in notepad or whatever and look for "TransformGizmoRestoreAxis=0" and change the 0 to 1....
if it's on 0, it'll make the X axis default if you move something on X once.... if it's on 1, it'll leave it as you set it on the main toolbar....
about the patch handles, maybe post a scene with locked handles for us to look at, i've worked on some mad patch characters and never had that prob

It looks like a regular vertex. Handles not too short etc but when i move one handle in one axis eg x all the others rotate with it to maintain the original shape.
