hi all!
I've been using this crummy 17" eyeball-frying monitor for the past 1.5years and I can't take it any more. My head is cancerous...I mean my deal is that I'm a POOR college student....whom is seeking a better solution for 2d/3d work and whom likes to do a little programming on the side <ahem...sorry> anyway I'm in a real ditz 'cause my monitor is tweaking out (dying) and I'm looking at purchasing a new one but I want to make a purchase that is worth my money.

What I'm looking for is a GOOD no EXCELLENT 19" TRinitron(flat) monitor (CRT) that can easily do 1600x1200@75+ Refreshrate..from what I've found so far I've narrowed it down to these three company's SONY, Viewsonic, Samnsung. From my research and experiance I really like the sony brand i.e. the CPD-400 but it costs upwards of 450+ easy...where as Viewsonic has a few better choices for less but I've heard a lot about distortion on the edges. Last but not least, Samsung, whom makes a bunch of really good high quality monitors but whom i've heard has problems with a large majority of them...and of which I've heard tend to burn out quickly (not very reliable)...but they are of a lower price overall...

I'd accept any comments what so ever. I just don't know what I should do!...I just want quality and clarity..and willing to spend up to 450 for a good monitor. thanx

Sony - that's all I can say. Their CRT's are pretty much the best in the affordable range (and also pretty much in the unaffordable rage ).
Always worked with them and they never let me down!

I got my Sony CPD-G400 for $450 from direct.mwave.com But it is more than you need, since you said you weren't looking for an EXCELLENT 19" TRinitron(flat) monitor (CRT) that can easily do 1600x1200@75+ Refreshrate

Sony is an excellent choice.
Hitachi are very good monitors too.

I have the E400 Multiscan 19" CRT and I love it. It really is amazing, and I think recently the new sony line came out so you might be able to pick one up for a few dollars less. Here's my advice however: Do not buy any monitor online. It's a pain is the ass for a number of reasons, plus you don't even get to look at it!

I use to be a Viewsonic supporter... but recently they've been turning shit out... very bad quality monitors, especially in the flat screen series. Sony seems cool, though I haven't tested anything of them.

No seriously... I'm very satisfied with my Sony, both at work and at home! And the only other monitor I've tried at a lower price range that made me go wow! is the Samsung Syncmaster. This is a really great 19" monitor, a few of my coworkers are sitting in front of these!

I've got a Sony Multiscan 500PS. It's 2 1/2 years old, and it hasn't failed me yet. (and it can do 1600x1200 at 85hz... or up to 2048x1536 at 60hz, if I was so inclined. )

Anyway, yeah, sony monitors seem to be your best bet.
