Hi guys!
Maybe somebody knows how to do that:
When you open the display properties and set the resolution windows doesn't let you select all the resolutions the card offers. I know it also depends which monitor is hooked up. But I've tried all kinds of things, like having a generic monitor driver, etc. - it all doesn't want to work.
Does anyone have a solution for this ?
I hope I described the problem sufficiently
Any help is much appreciated!

If you are in windows you have to go into VGA Mode (Safe Mode in 98) and re-do your set up.
On a MAC I have no idea. |

yo loki, u got the newest drivers specific to your grafix card & monitor? that's prolly the only reason it won't let you change to a higher res when it should |

Hmm, you've pretty much tried alot of the stuff. Here's some more to try out...
1) try changing your default refresh rate under the same advanced display properties (monitor tab->Refresh Frequency), it MIGHT (?!) unlock some resolutions you're seeking as some may only be supported under certain refresh rates.
2) some drivers may report different modes depending on the builds, os, card, etc. So try getting the latest drivers for your card and/or monitor if any.
Good luck. |

Hm, for Win98 there is this proggie HZtool with which you can set every res and refreesh rate. Don't work on Win2000 though
If you have a GeForce based card you can get this proggie that's called "Nvidia refresh rate fix", which is very similar to HZtool, but works in Win2000 [but only with Nvidia cards]...
If everything fails, I think there is a way to manually set this stuff in the registry... |

Loki:: the problem aint your video card.. sounds like you got an Nvidia one. The computer should automatically detect the resolution capabilities.. especially under 2k. unless you installed some primitive cga driver
.. the problem should reside in the monitor because i'm assuming your monitor isn't plug and play. so just go to manufactures website and get the .inf for your monitor and you should be fine. Also, you may want to check under your hardware properties to see if there are any conflicting devices . perhaps 2 video drivers installed... which usually causes windows to revert to some shit vga.
hope you get your problem fixed |

Thanks again guys.
What I wanted to do is somehow run with 1920x1440 32-bits and more than 60hz. But even with the fabulous tool that Otti mentioned above, I couldn't get it. So, now I have to ask someone (Froster is my best bet) if the Nvidia GeForce2 chipset allows running 70/75Hz in 1920x1440 at all???????
Thx ... we gonna get that booger! |

Hey Loki, I don't know if this can help. On win98 i had to touch the monitor.inf file because after updating to a new drivers for my vodoo the only resolution the computer recognized was 600x480 - -. After editing the inf file or deleting it, can't remember, I could switch to any resolution the card accepted (most of them bigger than those my monitor supports).
I've never had to mess with win2k for graphic problems, so I don't know if this could work. |

Loki - I just checked... Yeah, in 32bit the GeForce can't do higher than 60 Hz apparently at 1920x1440. Though in 16bit it can do 75 at 1920x1440. [at least that's what I can select in the Nvidia thingy, btw, my monitor is set to "Plug & Play monitor" and I got a GeForce2]

Thanks to all of you!
Yeah, Darklighter - I remember reading this on the box too - and even more faintly remember seeing something with 70Hz+ on it.
Oh well - let's not give up yet [raises the battle flag, screaming "Freeeeedoooooom - for our display modes!"
I'll go check on the Nvidia website ... I'll be back! |

Darklighter: Hm, you got the pro-version, which has 32MB more RAM and probably a higher clocked RAMDAC as well, which would be responsible for the higher resolutions.
Oh well, resolutions and refresh rates have always been something that confused me I hate that Windows doesn't have an easy built in way to set the refresh rates and all unofficial possible resolutions |

Ok guys, here it is:
The Geforce2 architecture (chipset) allows up to 75Hz in 1920x1440. It also supports 2048x1536 (I think also up to 75Hz).
The trick is in the drivers. The Nvidia Dentonator 3 driver I use (V6.50) is the reference driver for the chipset. It only supports resolutions up tp 1920x1440 and additionally only at 60Hz (as far as I experienced it).
When I installed the driver from Elsa, manufacturer of my card, I could set the refresh rate up to 75Hz in the res. mentioned above.
Finale:
So I reached my goal! 75Hz in 1920x1440. I set it in the control panel, hit apply ... and ... my monitor drops out and gives me one of those "Out of monitor frequency range!" windows. Argh!
So - it works, but I need to get that Sony 24" soon (that one supports refresh rates up to 80Hz in those resolutions). I got my monitor to run at 72Hz - but that was still waaayyy to flickery ...
Oh well - thanks everybody for helping me in my quest! See ya next time! |
