Hey!

Just wanted to let you know about a new service we are offering at In Depth Arts. In Depth Hosting ( http://www.critical-depth.net ) is a FREE web hosting service catered to the needs of artist webmasters. One of the big problems artists are having hosting their sites at the other larger free providers is that they cannot directly link to files on their websites wether it be for displaying an image in a gallery or posting their work on a discussion board. In Depth Hosting does not have this restriction. We also have many other features you would normally have to pay for such as:

Unlimited Disk Space (With restrictions)
Virtual URL: yourname.critical-depth.net
CGI-bin
Front Page Extensions
Advertising banners only displayed on front page of site.
FTP Access
Commercial Sites Allowed
5 Email aliases
Custom Error Documents
You can find a comparison of our features here: http://www.critical-depth.net/services.asp

All of this is FREE! Plus, unlike other free hosts you retain ALL rights to your intellectual property. We are not doing this so we can use your work on our site.

Thank you for your time and if you have any questions please feel free to contact me,

Eric

That's very nice of you Eric ... the service list seems really great. (I'm still wondering when/if 3dp will be back to hosting me...)

Frost,

If you would like to have a mirror of your site at critical-depth.net go ahead and sign up... then when 3D Palette gets back into the hosting biz you will have redundant sites!

Just a thought.

Not quite sure how that is an alternative. I didn't see anything about website hosting... I might have missed it tho.

well, if an artist is looking for space for his art, all he has to do is register there, and then he can upload all the art he wants.

the bonus?

it comes with a community of other artists, free of charge.

don't get me wrong, i think what you're offering is a wonderful thing. when i was offering up deviant as an alternative, i wasn't attempting to belittle your efforts.

thanks for the offer, i hope people take you up on it.

That's a very cool offer. Seems with everyone helping out we may get that linking problem worked out. (or at least a little under control, there'll always be people wondering why their pics on geocities don't work)

Frost,

I am glad you are happy with the service! It is also good to see your pic showing up instead of the notorious 'x!'

JCTerminal,

I didn't take any offense whatsoever at your addition to the post I was just making sure we were comparing apples to apples.

Awetopsy, I tried to bring up your site but got an access denied error

Row, You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink

I just hope we start out small and grow slowly so we can carefully monitor our resources and add new lines and such way in advance instead of getting flooded.

cool, thanks, i just got my welcome email!
will be moving in sometime this week.

by the way, how do you guys suggest to do includes, like common navigation elements. i don't like to use frames... been using php/javascript but it doesn't look like php is in there. is ssi(shtml) enabled?

i hope this lasts a long long time

April,

Can't wait to see your site online! Yes SSI is enabled... I think Frost is using it for the banner code on his site.

I will talk to Tom about PHP support and let you know about it.

I hope this lasts a long long time too.

so nice of you to even consider! feel ashamed to ask for mysql as well i've got a comments table in a database so you can comment on my pics. that would be the only thing missing i've got on my current free host when i move in... but i don't get (m)any comments anyway. 8) *shrug*

on the other hand, don't wanna make the free web host too attractive to just *anybody* which will happen if you add all the features... i'd like to think it would be a community of Frost calibre and higher artists and i'm willing to be the benchmark for *minimum* art skills requirement (me, aka posterchild digipainter wannabe :P )

should we let as many people as we want know about this place or are you targeting selected audiences like sijun?

April,

Don't feel bad for asking :-) I know we are thinking about adding SQL database access but I am not too sure about MySQL access. Won't say no though :-)

I am kind of against limiting this to just high calibre artists only because I do not like having to judge an artists ability. Plus it kind of defeats the purpose of what I had in mind for the site. Why should an artist with a lower skill level be confined to using hosts like Geocities and Tripod just because they are starting out? I would actually rather watch them grow as artists and have them know that they have a good home here at IDH, one that they can grow into.

Not to shoot down your idea.... I just don't think I want to be 'elitist' with this service as I don't think it would be fair.

i guess that means i can post about it all over the place i've been wanting to but wasn't sure if you did have a limiting factor in mind.

thanks again!

Thanks Eric!

I've been looking for and alternative to keeping my stuff on AT&T - and I'm running outta space anyway.

Will you, at some point, be offering support for registered domain names?

Pat

April & Coffingirl, when are you going to upload some stuff? LOL! Coffingirl, we saw you uploading a whole bunch of stuff then you deleted it :-)

Pixualize, right now we don't just becuase unlike most hosting providers we do not have a range of external IP addresses. We might be able to do it via host headers (like we are doing now) if you would be willing to sign up with a DNS forwarding service. If you would be interested in something like that then email me at [email protected]

Errr I was gonna move my forum over, but my account didn't support cgi, so I deleted it. My current webhost supports it, so I think I'll just keep it like that And I'm redesigning my site before I officially move to critical-depth
