I NEVER use the tablet for modeling, too unprecise for vertex editing or ANYTHING with regards to modeling (unless maybe you use some 3D painting progs/plugs). 9x12 is awesome if you ask me. |

Okay, me modeling, while a possibility, shouldn't really be taken into account, I suppose, as it would just be me fooling around with Blender or something.
So, I guess my question is, why would I go with a smaller tablet if the price is the same? Is the ratio that important?

I don't understand people with those big tablets. I work on a 6x8 at school and a 4x5 at home (though I sure wish it was 6x8). Have you worked on either, or worked on a smaller size? If you can work great on a smaller size, don't waste your money on a huge one..
I think its a matter of preference and what is the most comfortable. I did ok painting stuff with a 4x5, and i didn't have to use my entire arm to make a brushtroke
As for ratio stuff, my suggestion is the 9x12 dealy. I think there'd be less problems adjusting with the screen, since the screen isn't square.

I will be purchasing a Wacom Intuos tablet in a few days, and I have a question, I thought you could answer.
I am looking at the 12x12 or the 9x12 versions. I will be primarily using the tablet for drawing/painting. The description on the 12x12 says that it is great for 3d modeling, and the 9x12 says that its great for digital artwork.
Ok, I would go with the 9x12, but.. they are exactly the same price. So even though, I'll primarily be using it for drawing, is there any reason why not to go with the larger tablet?
thanks,

I use a 4x5 at home and have no problems with it. And I've used the big ol' 12x9 at work and the only real difference is that it takes up more room and you have to move your arm more.

I also prefer smaller tablets. The larger ones take too much desktop space anyway.. |

my se intuos 6x8 is great, hanv't worked on any other sizes but if you go to big you might have some issues with the praportions (have to move a long distance to make a little stroke). |

Actually this is no problem since you can use relative-positions but then what's the point in having a big tablet.. |

yes i would argee waccom say's 9x12 i think its x 12 any who, its supposed to be the best for relitive size so forth do not get the big one you will find your self making huge strokes just to get a small line.
but like th guy said you can set it up not to do that then whats the point of a huge tablet. |

when you buy the 9x12 you get the pen and 4d mouse, and with the 12 x 12 you only get the pen.
that's why they are the same price, marketing strategy, blah.. |

Thanks a lot guys. I am going to save some money and get the 6x8 for now, since I really don't want the mouse and it seems that your preference on tablet size is what you're used to, so i might as well try to save some money. heh.
One more question, what do you guys think about the refurbished tablets that wacom offers? They come with a warranty, they are repackaged and inspected and everything, but I'm always a bit nervous about used products, and these tablet seem even more prone to my neuroticness about used products.

(I haven't ordered it yet, and this thread could be useful to others, so if you still have some thoughts I suppose it would still serve a purpose to post them hear. |

Argh...smaller does not equal better..haha...the larger the tablet the more sensitive it is. Larger tablets also let you use your arm to draw and keep your from being too stiff.
Get the largest tablet you can...if you can afford the 12x12 tablet...get it.
I use a 12x17 and I dont like the smaller ones at all...too stiff...and not sensitive enough.

minus: I own a refurbished 6x8 SE. I ordered it from harmonycomputers.com for $199.00. The product appears to be in the same condition one would be if it was brand new, its factory refurbished and repackaged with a warenty so you have nothing to worry about even if it does brake. Comes with the same software and everything, its great.
And if you choose to use harmony to make your purchase disregard the 1 week backorder thingy, I got mine in like 4 days (apparently they did a 2 day mailing to me for the price of ground shipping.)
However, when you first get it don't expect to be able to use it just like a piece of paper, it requires a bit of getting used to but once you spend a little time with it you will love it forever. |

Yes, the pucks are used more for CAD stuff.
I happen to own a 12x12 Ace Cad Advanced Digitizer tablet that is currently running about $165. The only diff. from Wacom is it is not pressure sensitive, and the pen is attached. Well worth the price difference, as my results are excellent.
I like the 12x12 when I am doing large projects. My other PC has a 2x3 Cruise cat, so I can identify with continuous draw aspects, but the 12x12 "feels" more like real drawing....

as far as 9x12 vx 12x12 goes, I say go with the 9x12 (too bad they're the same price). I have a 12x12, and almost never use the bottom 3 inches of it. Sometimes I set the tablet on 1 to 1 ratio and use the whole area of the tablet in a square area on the screen. I'd rather have the 12x17 myself. I used to have a 4x5 - it gave me wrist strain, and I couldn't use my arm while drawing. It was ruining my real media work. |

yeah, larger tablets let your arm move..
..if you like to move your arm.
when i draw, my wrist never moves, just my hand, and i pan the image around with holding the space key on in photoshop.
