Okay folks, following in Anthony's great footsteps in releasing Loomis' figure drawing book, I'm going to be releasing Loomis' Creative Illustration book in sections of about 15 pages at 1-2 week intervals, as per Anthony. The entire book is a little over 300 pages and quite a few of them are color plates. So this will take some time. I've been doing scanning and file testing and am now getting some decent results, so I'm nearly ready to go - probably by this next weekend.

So far, I'm setting these up at 150dpi so they'll hopefully be decent enough quality to be printable on standard letter-size paper. However, the color images can get close to 1 meg which will start to add up, and might be a hassle for those of you with slower connection speeds. I'm working on a compromise.

There are ultimately 7 main sections to the book, and I will eventually be zipping individual files together into those section divisions.

In case you are not familiar with this book, the typical price for this rarity is usually over $200 - if you can find a copy. In it's day it was the premier reference book for students going into the field of illustration. Today it would still be an incredibly valuable reference book to learn illustration from - were it in print and available to more people. I have not ever seen any single reference book with as much valuable information for the would-be illustrator as this one book contains.

I have also considered compiling this at the end into a single screen-friendly pdf document.

Feedback on preferences would be helpful. I'll consider all helpful hints. Oh, and as far as copyright concerns... if I should be asked to cease and desist by a publisher or copyright holder I will naturally need to comply and stop. Hopefully not before the complete book is available for everyone -

Sounds fantastic. Any readable method is fine by me. The colour pages would definately be worth a bit of extra download time.

Looking forward to it.

Thats awesome,

maybe you should scan the b&w pages in .gif format, because the gif's from Loomis Figure Drawing are way better than the jpg's, if you zoom in enough so it is readable, the gif are better

Sounds like a splendid idea.

Where can I get hold of Loomis' figure drawing book?

Such a generous soul. Kudos.

One thing though; why do people scan so slowly? Is that how long it takes these days?

Possible answer: because they have other stuff to do in their days :-P

Say, what's the URL to the other one? I was having my exams when this was released, so I couldn't check the forum very much...

Thanks for all the positive feedback!
Smoochfest...heheheheh
I'm just pleased I'm able to do this for the great online community we have here at Sijun.

I'll be producing these pages in small batches because my time is limited - and it takes time to scan and adjust each image. So weekends are going to be the time when I usually have a couple of hours to scan , adjust and set-up.
Color images are currently planned as jpegs, black and white images and text pages will be gifs.

For Anthony's site and the online version of "Figure Drawing" you should be able to scroll down this discussion area until you find a "Loomis Project: Week 7" thread.

To find real copies of these books you should look at the "American Book Exchange" (or A.B.E.) web site. And if you're anywhere near Berkeley, California - Black Oak Books and Moe's Books usually have 1 or 2 copies of "Figure Drawing" - just saw one at Black Oak Books last week.

'nuff for now

That would be awesome.

I've turned my entire drawing class on to the loomis project, and along with my professors, they were all very impressed. More books = better.
If you ever need a mirror for the files just ask me.
