Yeah, this is a useful item to know.
Pinbar/punch registration comes from the days of hand-drawn cel animation. The pinbar itself is a simple device, it's a flat strip of metal or plastic with a series of five or six cylindrical nubs that are set at a certain distance from each other. It reminds me of something you would use to line up three-hole punch paper for binding. And that's actually pretty close.
What this thing is used for is to make sure that your animation drawings and/or cels will line up when they are placed under the camera. Cel animators used (and some probably still use) paper and acetate sheets that had been punched with a device similar to a three-hole binder punch, which puts holes in the paper/cel that fit to the pinbar. That way, your drawings are always in registration within the frame.
In any Disney or Warner Bros 'making of' film you might see, look for shots of the animators at work, and you'll see the pinbar. With the bigtime guys, it was usually mounted on a kind of turntable-equipped drawing table, so that you can move the paper at different angles while it's still attached to the pinbar. Anytime you see that classic 'how-to' shot of a guy flipping pencil drawings to make a rough animation, those sheets are attached to a pinbar.
That enough for ya? Hope it was clear.
