It's not quite as hardcore as Animo, but if you do have a more limited budget, Macromedia Flash can do some pretty good stuff too.

CEL Aniamtion
Cambridges animo CEL Animation tool is really only effordable for big production houses with TV and Film productions.
If you are interested in, then also have a look at Softimage Toonz http://www.softimage.com/products/other/
it is very mighty (and high priced), too
also look at these CEL Animation Progs http://www.animationstand.com/ http://www.cbuilders.com/ http://www.toonboom.com/ (not released yet but early buyers offering 150$) http://www.axasoftware.com http://www.lostmarble.com/ (funny prog, but nor really cel animation)
some of them have free evaluation copies in their download sections
Flash is really the best and most effordable vektorbased/web-animation soft
it can also handle drawn animation, because you can import all major image formats (e.g. PNG, GIF, JPG, TIF), but you have to color every single frame (if you did not do it before scanning) and the draw functions are very tricky and limited.
Or you have to vectorize it and animate your characters in Flash, but there are limited animation features. rotating, scale, transform and a very tricky form tweening (only for simple shape morphings). So the characters will look a little bit stiff. Hello Southpark...
This is the advantage of the CEL Animation Progs. They have coloring, scan and pencil test tools, and some have even a bones system and a lot more (e.g. Optical FX, Lens Flares uuuuuhhh... ).
But Flash fits most of the basic animation needs and there are a lot of very good animations out there, not only web animations.
The quicktime export lets you playout your animation (uncompressed if you want) to video and even film, because it has no resolution limitations.
also have a look at
Adobe.com because they have a flash editor too (forgot the name).
it is interesting , if you are familiar with after effects or photoshop, because it has an identical UI, but does not support Flash 5
btw, after effects is also useful for animation.
amiga (snif)... you know deluxe paint from amiga (what a question.. )? have a look at cosmigos pro motion it is similar http://www.cosmigo.com/promotion
A lot of Game Developers use it for Bitmap editing and it has a good animation section (never tested it) but it looks fine.
if you are interested in storyboard and timing software than have a look at http://www.mainstudios.com/ http://boardmastersoftware.com/
hope you will find your solution and .. sorry for my english...
bye Magnolia |

Great list of packages! I'd like to add newtek's Aura http://www.newtek.com and commotion from puffin designs: http://www.puffindesigns.com/products/commotion.html
also synthetik studio artist: http://www.synthetik.com/
These are all video paint packages, some of which feature resolution independence. It's like the old Amiga software, but with some neat new features to make life easier. While they don't "feature" animation, they are very good animation tools. Good Luck!

ive been trying to find something decent too.
anything simpler than these? i clicked all of them.
something like Painter 6, just without the stupid bugs, weak support for animation, and bad gui. anything?
[edit: heh descent]

for 2dcel animation I would recommend Plastic Animation Paper (PAP).
http://www.km-animation.dk/pap/
Very intuitive interface + total control over UI. Very fast. Realtime playback. Demo available. 'nuff said...
