scenario: on the users forum of free web host i'm on, a fellow user posts to get feedback on his website. everyone raves about it. a month later i get baldur's gate 2 and notice little familiar things... mainly the vertically mirrored american indian headgear thingo. he had used that as part of his nav interface. i do still believe he worked on the other parts, like the border graphics, himself... but cos of the nav logo incident his whole site is tainted. how do i know i won't run into that whole site design in a week or two.
ok, this guy is just a small time website owner... his site is just a fan site for something not bg2 related, but is in the fantasy genre.
this happens a lot and i know SOME of you would say forget it, it happens all the time, there are bigger fish to fry...
but the thread was ABOUT "his" graphics so i decided i had to point it out the next time he brought it up... which he did just yesterday.
so how do you explain that this is just not acceptable or do you even bother?
i have not had any replies on the thread since i only just posted the bust... which one other person noticed anyhow.

I'd just tell the person to put a small disclaimer that reads something like: "The graphics used for this website are both original designs and ones borrowed from other sources." He could list his sources if he cares to, but just that disclaimer will be good enough for me.

Also remember, integrity is not a quality everyone has. If this world was populated by only the good guys, our human history would read much, MUCH different.

just wondering if you guys would reply the same if it was your pretty logo he used. i'll point him to your websites then
he reckons he's a big bg2 fan and he didn't realise taking bits of game screenshots was as bad as using graphics off other websites.
others on that forum have suggested he put up a bg2 promotion page, or just mention bg2, to at least offset the usage...
*shrug*
i just found another current thread in random musings which seems relevant but has very different responses... http://www.sijun.com/dhabih/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001265.html

Perhaps if the perp in question got a friendly email from the legal people at Interplay or Wizards of the Coast...
People who think "nobody will know or even care" often put tail between legs when confronted by the primary People Who Care, namely the intellectual property owners...
