I am currently taking Taekwondo. My contract with them is not up for several months.

More specifically, Ninjitsu is the ninja arts. Cool...

Ninjitsu-- An ancient martial art originating in Japan. Essently, it was the art of the assassin. Hence the black garb. Very physically and mentally demanding. One of the higher martial arts, in my opinion.

It's what they fought with in The Matrix, if that gives you any clue.

Bishop_Six: Thats great! Is it a Bujinkan dojo? I've been training for a short time myself.. Just like to point out that ninjutsu is *not* a fighting style, it has more to do with espionage and so forth...The bujinkan is composed of 9 schools(ryu) of martial arts, and only 3 of them are pure ninjutsu. Hm, confusing?

Impaler: ??? I certainly didnt see any ninjutsu in The Matrix. More like wire and movie-fu. Oh, I forgot ninja dont get caught on film

The Matrix used Hollywood-fu. Basically a mix of everything that looks cool stuffed into 7 months training. A lot of the martial arts in the Matrix were simplified Ninjitsu moves, however.

Buyuu: Yes, it is Bujinkan. However, Ninjitsu may have more of a focus on stealth than other styles, but what are you talking about, "not a fighting style"? Every martial art is a fighting style(otherwise they wouldn't be martial arts).

I used to do Ninjitsu for a while. There are only like, 6 black belts in Scotland.

You get to wear black. Nice.

Well, maybe I should put it like this: You are not going to learn ninjutsu in the Bujinkan. Martial arts used by ninja and samurai, yes.
The main emphasis is not on silent movement/stealth (if trained at all).
Its still common practice to call what we do "ninjutsu", even if its not technically correct.. Hm, confusing enough?

Ninjutsu!?! Where did you find the class - I was under the impression that few taught it anymore. Anyway - cool, a little more interesting than the judo/tae kwon do/muay thai, the more common martial arts.
I practice Torii Aiki Ryu Aikido and hope to study Kendo at some point also.
Go on then, how many of your joints can you dislocate?

...thought it was Kung-Fu they did in the Matrix. (not that I'm right, just voicing an opinion)

I could have been brought into the Hollywood garbage that says it's something when in fact... it's not.

That's wicked awsome dude! I really wanted to train in ninjutsu for awhile, but I got into aikido (originates from aiki-jujistu) and It's a blast. It's is probably the best thing I have ever done for myself. Later this year, I'm taking capoeria (the martial art Eddy Gordo does in tekken 3) that should be real fun.

The most important thing is to train with a humble yet friendly/joyful manner. Have fun!

`What sort of people live about here?' asked Alice.

`In that direction,' the Cat said, waving its right paw round, `lives a Hatter: and in that direction,' waving the other paw, `lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.'

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.

`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad...'

I wanted to go to a class of wing-shun... but they said I was too... tall...

all those wee bastards are like 150 cm's long and weigh like 30 kg's... blah.

Thinking of picking up capoeira tho (before it gets too mainstream)

If you're going to take Taekwondo, beware. I've been in a style of Taekwondo for about 3 years now, and I can't wait to get out. Maybe what I'm taking is just a bastardized version, but it's totally competition based. What I'm looking for is something a little more practical for a real fight than a jump 360 outer crescent kick.

So, unless you're a competitive person, stay away from Songham Taekwondo.

Bishop, if you want something that you can use better for fights "out there" go with Aikido. I've taken aikido for almost two years now and it's great. I haven't had the chance to test my skills in a fight yet...but I'm sure I could hold my ground.

Hm, I have to disagree with snaplekap here...
If you want to learn to handle yourself in a fight in a reasonable short time, aikido is not very practical (neither is Bujinkan).
Depending on how "gifted" you are, traditional martial arts takes a long time to get good at.. Not saying you wont develop some basic selfdefence skill in a year, but to really *use* the techniques you train takes alot of hard work and effort..
If ya wanna learn how to beat a$$ in a short time go to the nearest boxing/grappling/shootfighting etc gym...

Yeah buyuu, you are right. Boxing and such will prepare you better straight away for a fight, but in the long run, Aikido or another martial arts will help even more. Aikido is not something you can just take for a year and be ready to take on anyone. You have to practice for years to refine your techniques. If someone trained for five years hard in boxing and in aikido I'm sure that the person trained in Aikido could take on the person trained in boxing. Of course, if you don't have the time or are not willing to train really hard for a long time, buyuu is right that you should take something more along the lines of boxing.

I feel inferior to martial arts discussion knowing everyone can kick my ass. The greatest experience I have had with martial art is Tekken 3 and even that took a lot of practice. My preferred style, by the way, is definitley the Glock-40.

Guns suck.

In Japan there is a place called Kanazawa, on the north coast of Honshu. Kanazawa is supposed to be the world centre of ninja culture. I picked up some ornamental shuriken (throwing stars) while I was there a few years back.
