I saw that earlier today, and said, um, "wow." The lighting effects and level of detail (both geometry and texture-wise) look astounding. It truly felt "real," like the screens of Metal Gear Solid 2. I only hope I can run it on my now-obsolete GeForce 2. *sarcasm*

The graphics look nice enough, technically speaking, but it seems to be taking a totally different approach than what I was expecting in a DOOM game. (Hey, if it's not DOOM, then why call it so?).
I loved the demon-like enemies, the bloodied bases, the swarms of enemies, the booby traps, the secret passages, etc of DOOM... that was the coolest stuff of all, because you could always trigger stuff accidentally, and you had to explore and be careful of the environment as well as it was dynamic in a way. From what I can see, this it turning out into another static Quake world.
Graphically speaking, the movies are nice, but you can definitely tell there is a lot of faked stuff going on that doesn't make any sense... they play a lot on flickering "dynamic lights" and such to make it hard to see the flaws, but hey, you can definitely tell there are many missing specular lights and backlights (ie, the environment doesn't light the actors, only a specficic tiny subset of placed lights do), and the stencil shadows well, who can't have that... anyway, neat, but I hope all this effort doesn't kill the "DOOM" gameplay heritage... |

Frost: this is just a technology demo to make people drool, you can't make assumptions about the gameplay from 2 minutes of footage when the game won't even be done for over a year. Jesus, give id a little credit. Why the hell are you bringing up booby traps and secret passages like you know they won't be in the game? Damn, this is just too stupid for me to go on.

The Doom demo, wow. It really was 'amazing' Sure it wasn't perfect, but it was leaps ahead of anything I've seen before. Dynamic lights w/shadows and shadows on characters, and having the graphics card take care of all the lighting instead of the programmer (GeForce2 did have lighting features too, but the 3 looks much better, and by then hardware lighting instead of just lightmaps may be standard.)
My trust in id was shaken by the poor bot AI in Q3A though
I went back and played doom because I loved its atmosphere, but it really wasn't as great/fun as I remembered it. It really didn't seem any more dynamic than Quake to me. Walls opened in Quake too, monsters appeared too. And unlike Doom, Quake had moving platforms (whoo great fun I know) |

Am I the only one who misses the time when the latest in 3D-Hardware cost about 300 $ instead of 600? just a question...

Jaysin: I'll give you some credit and say that you're right about me not knowing what's going to be in or not, but I've been playing id games since 1991, and I have seen the focus on technology taking over gameplay in a drastic way... or maybe that was just the Quake series trend. id is great, and I respect them very much, but I'm not bound to be a boot licking moron just because it's got Carmack's name on the box. What we saw looked nice, but artistically speaking, hey, let's be honest, it needed a little more thinking, ... but of course this is excusable as it's just a show of works in progress, in fact, it was to be expected. I brought these points up because they have changed everything else about the game design, which makes me question if they have given any consideration as to what made DOOM the icon it was. If that's stupid to you, then you must be way beyond my level of intelligence and game industry experience.
This should have been in random musings -- my bad.

Frost, maybe they don't want to follow the old series but made a new one from an old title. I mean, they may just try to do a good game following different standars than doom's ones, but keeping a good title.
Or maybe that was just a techonollogy test for a new videocard and they haven't started designing gameplay yet.
Who knows... |

i'm more excited about the geforce 3 hardware and doom 3's technology and macintosh's part in all of it, but it's still sweet stuff.
(for obvious reasons i'm interested in realtime 3d and the hardware and the software..)

Frost: The only reason I considered your post stupid is because it's pointless to make any comments about Doom 3's game play when there's no game at all right now. There has been next to no info on this game at all other than that it will go back to having a single player story driven mode (as well as Multiplayer). If that's all we know and with the footage shown I do think it's stupid to complain about the lack of "demon-like enemies, the bloodied bases, the swarms of enemies, the booby traps, the secret passages" like you know they won't be there.
As far as beating up on id for their previous game design and how that may or may not influence this game? Well, I guess you do have a better leg to stand on there, but I guess that just makes me an optimist then. Personally I think id had just fallen prey to the hype surrounding multiplayer games. Let's face it the original Doom didn't have a great story (there was no story). It was the standard find key open door kill lots of shit gameplay that they invented. Id kept that going right on up to Quake 1. Then at the same time people told id they wanted a better story for Quake 2 all everyone did was play multiplayer (yes the "story" of Q2 wasn't much of an improvement but at least they tried). When id set out to make Q3 multiplay was king and there was no Half-Life to make them think different. Now with Doom 3 I personally believe id's going to put some serious work into putting out a kick ass single player game. Like I said, maybe that just makes me a silly dreamer but I'd rather give id the benefit of the doubt and wait to see if I'm proven wrong when the game comes out.

If nothing else, one thing you can almost be sure of is that they'll make a kick-ass game engine, which other companies will be able to license to build their own games.
I haven't enjoyed the single-player aspect of an id game in a very, very long time. Not that they've tried very hard lately (which is ok.) Let's just hope they're not too out of practice to do a good job.
Incidentally, does anyone know if they've picked up any new notable employees for this project? (like anyone from valve, or raven for example?) Anyone with more recent single-player design experience? |

My God, that was very impressive! I'm salivating just thinking about it!(hehe, is that normal?) My question; is it shipping late March for Mac and Windows, or just Mac?
Damn, and I was just about to buy a Geforce 2! |

I believe the NV20/GeForce3 will be present in the upcoming XBox, so instead of updating our comps, we could just shell out $500 to Microsoft...

Sean:
I'm hearing simultaneous PC/Mac release. And considering Mac's don't have DX 8 to take advantage of a lot of the features... seems they're still getting the short end of the deal.
On X-Box:
Since they're using the same GeForce 3 as computers, as far as I heard, it really makes me take notice of this system. Have you seen the Malice screenshots? With closed architecture they can really go to town with features, on PC's they just can't afford to. Microsoft has worked themselves into a very good position. |

Thats some intense stimulating visuals there =) Going to agree with Frost on the comments.
Im looking forward to owning (in more ways than one) this game.
Is it me or does that marine look like a poor old fart stuck in a marines outfit? All in all this looks great. *Does a victory dance for ID*

Well it sure is a nice boost to the gaming scene, this news. I'm betting the real Doom III will look much better, they seem to be showing off high poly counts at this point, over effects. The capabilites are supposed to be there to do a lot more with specularity and stuff (everything looked kind of dryed-out, eh?) so we'll see. The Gf3 hardware *sounds* really amazing... but so have some other things over the last few years that nothing has really become of...
Having id behind it can't hurt though. They are certainly in the best position in the industry to popularize new technologies and sell hardware. Let's hope a consumer version of the Gf3 comes out that doesn't cost $600... and since Nvidia basically controls the whole industry right now, let's hope they get things right

Some of you guys are way premature in your speculations about this game. Geez... it's probably a year or more off in the future! Poor Carmack can't make a move without someone shitting on him for it. I say leave him alone and see what he comes up with. Don't lick his boots, don't break his balls. Let him develop... it's proven to work, historically
Waylon: I haven't heard about developers being hired, but I have heard that they signed Gillian Anderson to play the lead character. Sorry, no linkage...
